WELL WHAT YOU CAN FIRST DO IS CHECK AND SEE WHAT THE JUMPERS ARE SET ON THE DRIVE, AND I BELIVE YOU SHOULD PUT THEM TO SLAVE, AND WHEN YOU RESTART HOLD DOWN THE OPTION KEY AND IT WILL WAIT FOR YOU TO CHOSE YOUR OWN START UP FOLDER. OR IF YOU DON'T IT SHOULD BOOT FROM THE OSX DISK BECAUSE IT WAS THE LAST SET BOOT UP DISC.

BTW I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU THAT I HAD TO JUST USE ALL CAPS!!! HOPEFULLY IT WILL ALL WORK OUT!!!!!

the thing is that when i have both connected I cant even boot, the only thing i get is a question mark inside a folder, and when i start up with an os 9 disk holding the "c" key I dont see any of my drives!!,, I cant use techtool pro or norton because it seems like I dont have any disks!!! so, I have to disconnect the old HD and then everythings back to normal!

Probably a jumper issue. Check them. Visit the manufacturer's site if you don't know the settings.

okay calm down, take the drive out and look at both your HDs and who makes ther dirve, Maxtor, seagate, Western Digital, and then look at the jumpers (image below) and write down the combination, or if it says on the dive what it is Master/slave/cable select. and what you want to do i belive (at least for the older PM's) set one to master and the other to slave.

If it doen't say what its is look at the manufacuters web page, and serch for the jumper settings, i had to do this for my old 20 gig Maxtor, it took be 2 min on their site i and i was done. heres a pic of what the jumpers look like and an example of the settings, now i have no clue if its exactly the same for your dirve so double check.

er, i thought new machines couldn't boot into OS 9...

Edit: I now realise when you said new you meant not second hand, not new breed.

According to ATA specifications, you can have two devices connected to each cable: A master device and a slave device.
Check the jumpers, they're probably both set to master.

hey!! thanxs for the illustration !!!!
by the way, the original drive is an IBM one (weird huh?) and the one I want to boot from is western digital... so, I guess I have to check on their website right?

I'll do that, and then come back here... see you soon!

You don't have to check their website. The table of possible combinations should be on each harddrive, either on top or on the side right above the jumpers.

On the MDD models like the dual-867, BOTH drives should be set to cable select. That's how I have mine. The MDD models are auto-sensing.

It doesn't matter which is which. You just can't have both set to master, as they probably are now. But if you're gonna check the sit, then take BrunoB's advice and set them both to cable select.

ok, I set the jumpers in the old g3 HD to "slave" and when I start up the mac pressing the "option key" a new screen start up, showing me my OSX drive in the middle of the screen and 2 icons of arrows on each side.. so, I click on the right arrow and the system start up with OS X and now I see my old drive and my OSX drive in my AQUA desktop. cool huh? but check it out.. when I go to "system preferences" I have to choose between 3 diferent folders, the os 9 (in my os x drive) the os X folder and the os 9 folder (in my old g3 drive).. well I say to my self, EASY I just select the one that is on my old g3 and thats it! WRONG... When I select the OS9 folder of my old g3 the mac start up with OSX... It refuse to start with OS9 of my old g3... Whats happening? What I have to do?

And BTW, the g4 drive is set to "cable select" not "master" just to let you know.

Here's a very important thing to remember:

The copy of Mac OS 9.2.2 on that old hard drive was installed and configured for the G3 you used it in. It probably does not have the proper Mac OS ROM file or System resources that are necessary to boot your new G4. Also, depending on how new your G4 is, it may not boot into ANY copy of OS 9 - period.

I have a question, why do you need to boot off of that hard drive? If all your files are on it - then you can still access them, and all your old applications will still run in classic.

My wife told me the exactly the same your telling me now... and to be fare, you guys have a point... but here is whats happening... I need to use protools 5.0.1 and it only runs on os 9.2.2 not on 10.x and I just want to be sure it will work on OS9... see? if at the end I cant boot entirely on that old g3 drive.. then I just have to live with that. but somebody told me it can be done. so I will love to try.

i still want to see if I can boot from os9 on a different disk. help

ChrisB's point is a good one; it's possible the installation is missing something. But the dual-867s will boot OS 9. The current 1.0/1.25/1.42 FW800 models are the first X-only Power Macs. If the 9 drive is set to slave, I'm almost certain that's the problem. It MUST be set to cable select. I had the same issue with my 867, the drive would not boot when set to slave.

I note to remember for the future - as I setup and maintain post-production setups - always, always, verify with the software vendor and the hardware vendor that the software you have will work on a new Mac, and the OS will work as well. Eventually you'll have to upgrade ProTools someday just to work on a new Mac.

Avid Media/Film Composer suites are very picky when it comes to Avid certification.

ok.. I get it, in fact.. i will try to use OSX to work with my old files I think I can. And just for your information, I have an Mbox that came with protool 6, the thing is that I have some plug ins that dont work on OS X. see? and is unfair to pay again for those plug ins, or pay for updates, so, if I can, I will still working on protool 5.2 on OS9.. but right now, I am Happy with the results I get with all your help! my g4 is great and its running smoothly, thanxs a lot guys...
