Hi, I somehow have filesharing working only in OS 9, and only in one direction.
Here's the situation:
400Mhz iMac DV (G3, slot loading, Rage 128) running OS 9.2.2 and 10.2.4, connected to an 800Mhz TiBook running 10.2.4 via a cat-5e ethernet patch cable.
When the iMac is running X, filesharing fails to connect from either machine. It hangs at the authentication dialog and eventually times out with an Appleshare error.
When the iMac is running 9, I can connect to it from the TiBook and send files OK, but any file recieved from the iMac is corrupt. E.g. the sharing is only reliable in one direction.
If I ping the TiBook from the iMac in X, I get anywhere from 20% to 90% packet loss. This is with a 6 foot cable.
If I use FTP sharing, I can ftp in but it usually hangs right away after the password, otherwise early in a file transfer.
The TiBook ethernet is supposed to auto-sense if it is connected to a hub or another machine and do the right thing, but I tried patch and cross-over cables anyway, with the same result.
The TiBook filesharing works perfectly in X with another TiBook, with either cable.
The rest of the iMac hardware seems to work fine (aside from the noisy drive...)
Here's my questions:
1) Does this sound like faulty ethernet hardware on the iMac? (it seems at least possibly software related since 9 works differently than X.)
2) Is there a known issue with faulty ethernet hardware on iMac DVs?
3) Is there a utility to test the hardware? Unlike the PowerBook, the iMac did not come with a hardware test CD.
4) Is it possible that the cable auto-sensing is just not working, and using a hub would fix everything? I don't have a hub to test with.
5) If the hardware is faulty, what is the likely cost to repair it? The machine is two years past warranty now.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
