Does the power light flash orange? This happened to me when I tried to install 1 GB into my iMac DV. I tried putting in different combinations of my previous and new 512 MB sticks (which worked), then I put the 1 GB back in again-- and it worked. Hopefully this fix is reproducable!

it only has 512 which is i think the max.....all of the sudden no one touched it and when we start it up its not regonizing the ram

Hrm. All I can think of is the usual resetting the PRAM (hold Command+Option+P+R at startup until you hear 3 chimes), or maybe pressing the CUDA button. I'm not sure where the CUDA button is on the older iMacs though.

reinstall the ram.
reinstall the processor card.

try one module of ram at a time.

Make sure you're using 32Mx64 (256mb) modules max in either slot.

More than that in an original fruit colored (non DV, non slot loading) is not going to work.

slot loadings can take up to 1gb, tray loaders can take 512mb.
