Tonight after shutting down my G4 (Dual 867MHz MDD) to blow some dust out of it, and booting back up, the monitor (19" NEC CRT going from DVI-VGA adapter to GeForce4 Titanium) obtained a blue-green tinge to it.

My first thought was a bad monitor, so I tested it with my iBook and it looked perfect. I then checked the pins on the monitor cable and the adapter, those were fine. I then reseated the AGP card, booted back up: blue-green screen.

I also ran the Apple Hardware Test CD. Passed both the basic and extended tests.

So, here are my guesses:

Situation A: Card has gone bad. This would suck. I bought the card through MegaMacs.com in February and the 30-day warranty that came with it is obviously gone.

Situation B: DVI-VGA monitor has gone bad. Any way to test this? I might have to get Apple to send me a new one.

Situation C: Some weird system issue. Anything you guys can suggest to test on the system? Or any weird glitches I might not have heard about?

Thanks in advance, and if you have any information to contribute it would be greatly appreciated. I really don't feel like spending another $300.

Whilst I may be off here, a blue-green tinge on the screen would shout "interference" to me. Do you have any unshielded speakers nearby that you moved when testing it with your iBook?

I can't say exactly what the problem is, but you've already eliminated the monitor as a fault. When you were booted from the HW test cd was the image normal?

Hope this helps you,

Phil Quinney

No, the monitor has no interference on it. And the image was bad on the hardware test CD. Interference wasn't a concern because I didn't move anything when I tested with the iBook.

But... I just realized now that when I jiggle the adapter cable, the image goes normal briefly. It looks like it's the adapter, so I called Apple and they are sending a replacement adapter.

Whew.

That was my next suggestion

My brother's old 17" has a habit of being pink - which I must admit adds a bit of colour to the linux prompt it runt (PC, see.)

Glad it got sorted for you.

If you don't have a television or speakers near the monitor I would try to degause it (check the monitor's menus). I had a similar problem and that cleared it up.

I have an 17" ADC connector display and it gives that blue-green tint if the connector isn't seated properly on the video connector of the video card. If the cable is bumped/moved/jostled, sometimes it takes a few tries to get the blue-green cast to go away. I'm not sure if the issue is in the ADC connector end itself or on the ADC port on the included AGP video. Perhaps I should find out for sure before my 1-year warranty lapses...
