I'm thinking of upgrading my BW G4/550 (Overlocked OWC G4/500) to the Powerlogix G3/800. Apparently it overclocks pretty well to 900 mhz through software. Since I don't do alot of intensive altivec stuff, I think this may be worth it. Game performance would certainly improve. This would keep me happy until the G5 works its bugs out.

It sounds like a pretty good upgrade. There's a review of it up at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com

I wouldn't "up"grade from a G4/550 to a G3/800. Given that the Quartz GraphicsLayer benefits a lot from AltiVec it might be a slowdown in most cases rather than a speed-up.

according to some benchmarks that are shown in xlr8yourmac.com the 800mhz g3 is faster than the g4 in most cases and slower by not much in the others (seconds) and is just makes sense that a 800mhz is faster than a g4 500...i know altivec and stuff but the g3 machines that the 800mhz was made for do not have agp so Quartz Extreme dont matter! i mean u can use the hack but it doesnt really help that much...so i think that the 800mhz g3 upgrade is not bad at all...especially since you can run it pretty good at 900mhz with stock cooling...i think it might be stable at even 1ghz with my bigger heatsink and fan

Even if it *IS* a little teeny-weeny bit faster, it's still not $275 faster. And It WILL be slower for anything Altivec-enabled.

Be happy.

I've got a B&W G3/400 with the Ultra2SCSI drive. It's quick but no longer fast.

I can't decide whether there's enough in a G4 upgrade to bother. I mostly do Photoshop on my dual 800 now. I wonder if there's enough difference with AltiVec-enhancements to buy a slower G4 upgrade or whether the faster G3 upgrade would be better.
