I have a Dual 867 that was running 10.2.4 just fine, until today when I was making an OS 9 boot CD. It gives the old flashing question mark/folder icon after the startup chime, then nothing. Here's what I tried:

1. Booting from various OS 9/ OS X CDs (either with Option key or C keys).
2. Booting into single user mode.
2. Booting into Open Firmware and doing reset-all.
4. Zapping PRAM.

None of the above worked. Any other ideas?

Could you be a little more specific? When you say it didn't work, what exactly appears on screen.

You could try holding 'x' to force booting into OS X.

None of the things I tried above resulted in the Mac finding a bootable system folder. In other words, it hangs forever on the flashing question mark/folder icon. I also forgot to mention that I tried resetting the PMU, with no effect.

Make sure all of your cables are seated properly. A friend had similar symptoms and lo and behold, re-seating all of his cables fixed the prob. he had no idea how it happened.

good luck

I had the same problem on a Dual867 running 10.2.4 last week .

However, for me the loss of a valid system folder was totally random after a restart...

In the end I had to do a clean install of 10.2 and all was fixed. I have now gone back up to 10.2.3, the last stable build for me on the d867...

Peace,

Marc

Well, I finally fixed it by booting up in Firewire target disk mode, connected to my TiBook. From there I reformatted the system partition and reinstalled 10.2. I still don't know what caused the original problem, but at least it's fixed.
