I finally got a 20th Anniversary Mac. I was just wondering how many units were produced?

I don't know how many were produced, but it was a very limited edition run...

I mean, if you paid $10k they delivered it in a Limo, and a guy in a Tuxedo set the thing up! They can't have done that too many times...

I usually get loads of info from here... http://www.apple-history.com , may be worth a look.

Peace,

Marc

I'd like some photos too... this a rare computer, and definitely a nice-looking one at that. It and the G4 Cube have achieved an almost legendary status in the Mac world.

Goodness knows that I'd love it if we saw some reincarnation of either in the near future. Heck, some would argue that the 17" PowerBook is a reincarnation of the TAM. They're both huge, thin slabs of computer with built-in LCDs, and they're both treated like desktop systems!

Straight up, it really happened! It was a special promotion for the people who bought it in the first few months of release or something.. I initally thought it was a joke or urban myth, but it turns out that Apple did have Limos and Tuxedos standing by!

A salesman from the time emailed 'Apple History' with the details of the promotion a while back...

I just wanted to add a comment about the 20th Anniversary Mac. I was actually selling macs retail at the time of it's release and there was a very Apple-esque promotion based around the celebration. You mention that it started at a retail of $10 K. But what this included was that a limo would deliver the Mac to your house, and a man in a Tuxedo would set it up for you. We only had one customer who actually went through with this, but as far as I know, the setup was delivered as described. Not bad for $10 K.

Ben"
I am thinking of demanding a Limo if Apple ever releases the 970

Peace,

Marc

P.S. To the original poster i just did some digging about, and found some decent sites like this one... Turns out that only 12,000 were made, and then they broke the moulds so no more could ever be produced. Also I would be very wary of putting any hard drive over 4 gig in there...

Ahh, I wish I had known some pics of a TAM were wanted earlier...I just recently boxed my TAM back up. It's a pain in the ass to box that thing up correctly..hehe Oh well. I actually think it cost more like $8,000 for the delivery personally from an apple employee. When steve came back they were sold for $2000 brand new. That's when I picked mine up!

Thanks for all the responses. Actually I want to reply to 2 posts here.

First, did I pay 10000$, and was it delivered per Limo. No and no. I got it for an hour of Mac OS X support, and it was delivered in a Toyota Starlet

As for the maxing it out with RAM etc. tip.

RAM was already maxed out, and I popen in a 10GB Hard drive. No upgrade cards for me. I don't intend to use it as a work horse. OK that's not correct. The sound is wicked (no buzzing) so I popped in a PCI FireWire Card. The G3 Processor is surplus to requirement

You got it for one hour of OS X support!?! Wow. I wish I would have the same kind of luck. Must be worth quite a chunk of change in a couple of years ...

So has anyone here tried to get OS X to run on their TAM's. I had heard horror stories at first, but since then no news.

By the way, i just tried that tam.axon.net link and it isn't working. The last time I checked was about 2-3 weeks ago and it was working then. I hope they get that back up, because it is one of the biggest resources TAM owners have online.

As a TAM owner (soon to be a former TAM owner in all likelihood, but that's another story), I remember following the question of OS X installation in the early days, when there were indeed horror stories. More recently, I've seen reports of successful installations on 6500s; since the TAM motherboard is basically just a modified 6500 board, it may be possible now to install OS X. Or the TAM motherboard might have just enough modifications to screw things up.

But even if it worked, you'd be stuck with the original 250 mhz 603e processor unless Sonnet decided to create OS X drivers for its L2 slot G3 cards (and Sonnet's website says that, after looking into the possibility, they're not going to do it). Combine the slow processor with a maximum 128 MB of RAM (which is the bare minimum for OS X) and you're looking at a pretty miserable OS X experience.

With a Sonnet card, the TAM is still a decent performer, as long as your needs are modest. I've used one for word processing on a near-daily basis for the last five years, originally with OS 8 and more recently (after installing the Sonnet card) with OS 8.6. But it's a relic of the pre-Jobs Apple, and it shouldn't be expected to run an OS designed for more current hardware.

Mine is now the ever-changing high tech pictureframe plus radio and TV in our living room. I just got inspired to try turning on Speakable Items and make a script to advance to the next picture in the slideshow.... "computer, new picture", and it fades to a new one.

Yeah, that would be fun.
