Hi,
I just picked up an 867MHz Quicksilver - my first G4. When I bought it, I confirmed that the machine had an L3 cache. However, I can't see any evidence of one in System Profiler. Is this something that would normally show up there? Can anyone tell me how to identify if I do indeed have an L3 cache?

Thanks,
Dan

Seems you may not have one after all. My Dual 1.25GHz G4 MDD lists the l2 and l3 cache separatly in the system profiler. Might want to check me on that.

Yeah, a little more research and it's looking like I may not. Going to be making a phone call tomorrow!

according to the Applespec database, you should have a 2MB L3 cache.

According to the AppleSpec DB, all 867MHz's should have an L3 cache. What I seem to have here is an academic market version that does not have one, though it wasn't purchased from an academic outlet.

Jazzphone, I think we might have the same machine. The 40GB IBM DeskStar was also the standard drive on mine, which is smaller than the 867's normal HD (at least it's 7,200rpm), plus it has a CD-RW instead of a SuperDrive (which I wasn't interested in). I've got the GeForce4MX as well.

Apple did sell a 867mhz QS model for education with no L3 right after the MDD's came out. Before that the Edu special was 800mhz, 733mhz

The edu. model of 867Mhz QS lacks the L3 cache. You can install Apple's CHUD Tools
at http://developer.apple.com/tools/debuggers.html and see. That software requires the Dev. tools.

You can try Sonnet's Metronome

Oops, OS 9 only.

Sounds like the person who sold you the 867 MHz QuickSilver bought it when it was an educational machine special, and just figured it had L3 cache. But if they said it did have it when you bought it, I would request a refund and buy the real 867 MHz model with it.
