I've been experiencing an odd problem with my IMAC. It is a freezing problem that should not happen. One symptom of this problem that is the most annoying is that the my optical mouse doesn't track well sometimes. The mouse jerks across the screen. It gets stuck in some places and then moves again creating a jumpy effect and sometimes my IMAC freezes in this state. I can't do anything except turn it off in the back. I can't force quit out of it or anything. I tried resetting the PRAM and that didn't work and now I'm stumped and upset. This is my beautiful IMAC and it is sick, can somone help. Thank you for your time.

Is your OS current? That might help if you're not running the latest version.
Do you have extra RAM in there (other than what came from Apple)?

I also have a 17" 800 imac and have problems with my mouse jumping across the screen but no freezes (touch wood), I,m also running the latest OS and an optical mouse pad.
This is more of an annoyance than a serious problem I also hope theres someone out there who has an answer.

Hmm. I don't think it's a hardware issue, I've been noticing this odd mouse behavior lately on my optical mouse as well, 10.24, iMac dv. My Mac hasn't frozen though. What I've had to do a couple of times when the mouse has acted up is unplug it from the keyboard.
i look in your general direction

I found out that it wasn't freezing and all I had to do was unplug the keyboard in the back to unfreeze the mouse, but I'm still having the mouse jerking problem. I still have not figured it out. Someone told me its probably a software conflict, but that's just a guess. There may also be a problem with the USB ports randomly, because sometimes I have to unplug my I-SUB and plug it back in to get it to work. Just a shot in the dark.

My cursor jumps about too - but only when the system's under heavy load. No freezes.
