While browsing through the net I came accross an article on xlr8yourmac ( http://www.xlr8yourmac.com) that mentioned that the new Powermacs already ship with a USB 2.0 controller chip and that a driver would be needed.
The article mentions that the controller chip is from NEC and a link to the chip's specs are provided too.
If this is true, this will be yet another technology that Apple's hardware posesses but the operating system doesn't support. (just like the last generation's Powerbook's Panasonic DVD-RAM capable Superdrives)

Someone with a USB 2 device and a 1.42GHz or 2003 OS X-only 1.25GHz Power Mac should test this out.
Late last year I tried a no-name USB 2 Cardbus Card in my Powerbook and tried burining at 16x to an Iomega portable burner. It worked!!
This was WITHOUT any drivers (and using Toast).

Anybody think this might just be in preparation for apple releasing FW 800 on more things and shipping more Macs with USB 2, perhaps the next round of iBooks will come with USB 2 as will the next round of iMacs.

I've heard loads of reports of it working... and there are no driver issues at all. Why else would USB 2 cards be offered for the Mac if they weren't going to work?!
Would Apple make a brand new OS (that they also keep running on x86!) without USB 2 support ...
While I wince at USB 2 in general, and it's very obvious flaws, why not put it on?
If PC people swapping over have a load of USB and USB 2 gear as they didn't have firewire on their PC's, why not put it on to make the move easier and cheaper?
I'll stick with FW thanks very much, but it seems chirlish to exclude a technology that could be added for no real extra cost.
Peace,
Marc
(I think it was being saved for the next rev... but it came to light early.)

No 'real extra cost'?
Driver development and testing aren't free.
Don't you find it more likely that apple just bumped the feature to the next OS release? Their alternative was to release a crash prone OS or delay the release for months while verifying stability.
Testing and debugging are not free!

My point was, that it is on the board. It works, so they have spent the R&D money, and as such it is inconceivable it would go unused...
The work has been done, it was just being saved for a later release and WAS coming out soon...
It would seem churlish for anything but this to happen!
Sorry I wasnt clear in my post!
Peace,
Marc
