Yesturday my Maxtor 60GB 7200RPM from July 2001, was double beeping every 30 seconds. I was forced to shutdown once I figured out with help what the problem was.

I then rebooted to a "?" and no HD activity, Zapping PRAM, and power on/off didn't work.

I unplugged the computer plugged in and the computer booted. I then tried to use Toast to backup my critical data, but after file verfication Toast just hung.

3 Reinstalls and the same thing.

I reverted to using the Finder burning and 50+ minutes for a 4x burn, at 8x for my next CD 18 minutes but a error during verifcation (I can see the CD).

I have decided to just get a new HD (Maxtor 120GB with fluid barings), and am thinking of using the warrenty replacement for a new 60GB and put it in a Firewire enclosre.

Now for the problem, I have a Beige G3 Revision A with an OrangeMicro USB/Firewire PCI (USB 1.1 version). So the question is has anyone on a Beige G3 used a firewire hard drive enclosure with a Maxtor?

I will be using the new refurbished drive (shudder) for nightly backups form my main Drive.

i also have a Yamaha 16x10x40 Firewire CDRW on the same card. it has worked flawlessl

I had a Beige G3/266 with a Belkin USB card, used a Maxtor 40GB FW drive and would not recommend Maxtor. You could certainly use your drive in a FW case, I just have not had good experiences with Maxtor.
