I think my Super Drive in my QS has died. It doesn't recognize any cd, audio or dvd disk I put in there. It just thinks about it then spits the disk out. Same behavior in OS X and OS 9 so that's why I think it's a hardware failure. I don't remember when it last worked as I don't find I use it that often. I'm going to buy an optical drive cleaner tomorrow and see if that helps. Cross fingers.

Anyway, I opened the case and wanted to pull out the drive just to inspect it. But I couldn't figure out how to get the thing out. The power supply blocks the back. I took off a couple of screws and thought maybe I could slide it out sideways but it wouldn't budge. Didn't want to force it so I stopped. Anyone familiar with this case know how to get at the optical drive? Sigh.

Of course it's out of warranty and don't have AppleCare. I've never had an optical drive go bad and I'm distressed as this machine is only 15 months old.

Should you need to, instructions on replacing the optical drive in a QS, including a QuickTime movie, can be found here.

Basically you need to remove the four screws that hold the optical/zip drive carrier to the chassis, slide the carrier out backwards and sideways, unplug the power and ribbon cables from the drive, and remove the four screws that hold the drive in the carrier.

Never mind. I found the Apple CIP page. Even though it says the MDD model the optical drive contains info about the QS.

Axo1ot1, thanks for the link to OWC. I may have to go that route.

[Edit] Thanks RodUK. I was writing this as you were posting.
