Naturally a desktop of the same clock speed will almost allways outpace a notebook. Its a question of weather you value mobility or speed more. A 1 GHz powerbook would make an awesome video editing machine, just not so fast at rendering etc.

The DP will always be quicker in theory. But from what I have seen, on occasion, not by that much.

I have a dual 867 and a Tibook, the Ti more than holds it's own, and on some occasions 'feels' better than the Powermac.

I suspect when the 970 comes out (June?) the difference will become accademic... I for one will jump for a 970 powered Alu or Ti big time!

Peace,

Marc

Since the dual desktop system has two processors and you're planning on using Final Cut Pro which is written to take advantage of dual processors, the desktop will blow the PowerBook out of the water on complex tasks.

However, some of this depends on the type of work you're doing. If you're not doing huge projects with lots of effects the PowerBook may well be fast enough to do what you want - for example, assuming the dekstop is 2x faster, your render that takes 2 seconds on the PowerBook may only take 1 second on the desktop, so you save a whopping great one second! woohoo!.
However, if that render takes 12 hours and the desktop can get it done in 6 then you've saved yourself a lot.
Gods don't kill people - people with Gods kill people.

Which Ti do you have? I've got a Ti800 and a dual 867, and the dual 867 is significantly faster. If you've got a 1GHz Ti, the gap probably closes quite a bit... but I'd imagine a dual 1.25GHz PowerMac would beat it substantially.

I was comparing to a Ti 1ghz which I nick from work now and again!

For intensive/large file Photoshop/Illustrator stuff, yep there is a performance difference... I don't use video apps, but I expect it would be even more noticeable in that field.

However, for the work I do, the Powermac advantage is not as big as it could be, and I would expect it to be... For example, with apps like Indesign 2, the difference is pretty negligable.

For general computing like doing my books with 'non-dual' aware apps like MYOB and stuff like that, there seemed to be not that much difference at all between machines. In fact on occasion, the 1ghz Ti is more responsive!

Although, as you say, I'm sure that the 1.25s and 1.42 are a different league...

I'm so seriously thinking of ditching my Powermac when I go back to Uni later in the year and do less design, as I am sick of the racket the PM makes and the fact it leaves me kind of 'cold'.

Bring on the 'Alu' 15 Powerbook, or a 970 chip. I have vowed never to buy another G4...

You can get a new power supply They are definitely quieter.

I'm in the opposite situation -- I'm done with school and am now trying to rationalize my desire to keep a laptop. Just don't need it anymore...
