In Apple Hardware Test, the first two lines in terminal mention Invalid Memory Access,
SRRO 01400108 SRR1 40010870 . is this a reference to the empty memory slots or something else?

bad disk needs replacement Known issue!

I was on the line to Apple and they admitted to the possibility of a bad CD. I was trying to recognise a new Cruicial 512mb DIMM. They
had me pull the ram and run the disk with the
stock install. It ran fine. After walking me through a firmware reset, we installed the new
ram and ran Apple Hardware Test. the Invalid Memory Access line returned. Conclusion, bad
ram. Called Crucial to replace module which they are doing. Have others experience with
Crucial memory? Issues with Apple Hardware
Test? Bad Apple Hardware Disk?

It IS a bad CD. The day I got my powerbook, I ran the CD, and got the same invalid memory access message. Turns out a lot of people who had just recieved their powerbooks were all getting the same results.

Just received replacement 512MB Ram Module
from Cruicial. Original ram was a Samsung stick. The replacement is Micron. Apple Hardware Test sees it and passed it. This installation was flawless.

While it is possible Cucial shipped a bad stick, I would be tempted to look at the CD...

I have used Crucial for years and bought loads of memory of all types from them without any problem whatsoever...

Either way, glad it got sorted...

In the past I've been amazed at the number of problems encountered by some people. I've been pretty laid back over the years and generally managed my expectations pretty well. Maybe I've been lucky but my experience
with Apple has been 99% trouble free hardware. The 1% is this past Ram glitch. This is going back to Original 1984 Mac, fx,ci, performa's iMacs and Power Macs. This bad memory was a surprise. I suppose it could be Apple Hardware Test software. It didn't like the Samsung stick and neither did my computer (beachballs). Samsung was mentioned elsewhere on the forum as being problematic. Micron replacement fixed their problem also. Interesting Crucial is a division of Micron. Micron designed the memory. Their stick worked. Samsung's did not. Micron sticks are clearly marked 333MHz. Samsung was not. Crucial sells both Samsung and Micron. As it stands now, I will specify Micron Ram when I buy from Crucial in the future. I have to rely on empirical evidence until there is other
compelling evidence. It's always fun to persue
clarification
