Hi there.

New Mac convert (and MACNN member) who has just got a powermac G4. I am wanting to transfer photo files from my old PC laptop to my new machine. My PC has no CD writer and I am wanting a cheap and easy way of transferring the files. I have in excess of 3000 photos so emailing them to myself is not an option!
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum!

The exact topic you are asking about is being discussed in a few threads over at the Powerbook forum as I type... lots of weird and wonderful suggestions have been put forward, but the best is probably using an ethernet cable and linking the 2 machines (assuming the PC has ethernet...) to enact a transfer.

The thread above discusses loads of options, and does so much better than I ever could... well worth a look as I'm sure it will contain info to solve your problem!

Enjoy the Mac!

Peace

Marc

Yep! The exact method was devised by myself & posted in the Networking thread...it worked flawlessly when I was in your shoes w/ my new PowerBook instead, so hopefully it'll help you out as well!

P.S. - Congrats on switching!!! Hope you enjoy your Mac, and welcome to the LightSide!

yeah, screwing around with yahoo messenger is the only way to do it.

even if you couldn't get file sharing working (smb) you could always try the built in websharing on the pc to get your files.

I can't say that I've had a great deal of trouble with smb (apart from getting it sorted in the first place)

Of course it's not the only way, however, it's a viable method that's completely simple for newbies and switchers to understand, and it works beautifully. No one hasta use it, but it's here for those who do.
