i was just wondering about the firewire 800 and why it is presented as a major new feature with the new powermacs and 17 inch pb.
what devices are compatible with the firewire 800???
how much of an advantage is it when transferring dv?? do any dv cameras have firewire 800 support??

do you people find uses for the firewire 800???

Do you find Firewire useful?

If so, FW800 is just as useful, if not doubly so! Or, will be in the next few months when more and more devices ship with it as standard...

I can't see what there is to dislike about double speed firewire?

In the last few days a host of CD-RW and DVD-R drives have come to the market that are FW800 compatible (Most modern drives will now ship with USB 2 and FW 800 connectors) the future will bring DV Cameras, cameras, HDs, Clustering, IP over FW800 etc etc How about a really fast network around your house using IP over FW800? Sounds sweet to me...

FW800 is also vastly superior to USB2 as it backwards compatible with FW400 when you have the small adaptor.

With USB2, as soon a s you plug a USB1 device into the bus, it all grind to the a veritable halt and the whole bus will operate only at the speed of USB 1!! This means you have to replace ALL your peripherals to get any real advantage!!

To me this is a ridiculous state of affairs, and does not happen with FW...

Also as with all fiurewire, you can still get a power supply from FW400 and 800 allowing for devices without powersupplies.... Although USB 2 can do this, its very flaky and ain't gonna be seen any time soon...

To me, FW800 is a very sweet technology... even if it will not see it's full potential until later in the year...

Peace,

Marc
