i am trying to get this set up finally. i got it with 2 SCSI drives installed. it boots off of those just fine, but as soon as i add an IDE drive (60GB Quantum Fireball) it will not boot. i get a flashing disk at startup. i tried switching the jumpers on the IDE drive from master to slave, but have had no success. this is my first time working with a PowerMac so extensively and i feel a little overwhelmed. is there something easy that i am missing?

** EDIT **
i was using the Ultra ATA connection next to the IDE connection on the Logic Board and was not having any luck. after i removed the plastic on the front i was able to add the drive in the bay below the CDROM drive. is this OK? or will i run into problems with heat?

The plastic on the front of what? The Mac? The hard drive?

I doubt you'll have problems. I had SCSI drives running in my Beige G3 which has basically no circulation and they did all right. There seems to be pretty good airflow in those El Cap cases so you should be OK, assuming the drive works on that bus.

sorry, the plastic on the front of the case. the drive fits perfectly in the bay, and seems to be running OK.

I was probably one of the only morons who ordered a decked out Smurftower with DVD-RAM and a 36GB SCSI drive. Basically, it's an IBM LVD SCSI drive that works with an Apple-branded Adaptec card in a PCI slot.

The problem was it never worked. The moment I got the thing in 1999 it would crash and lock up. I had it checked I don't know how many times.

Then I replaced it with a standard off the shelf 7200rpm Western Digital 100GB IDE. It installs and runs OS 9.2.2 beautifully. It does not properly load 10.0, .1, .2 at all.

Anybody got a OS 9 WebStar v4.5 licence?
