What is it? Its come with every mac I've bought in the past couple of years and I've found no use for them yet. Anyone know?

What connections are at both ends?

It could be a USB extension cable?... I always get one of those..

it has usb connectors but its a funny shape so you can't plug usb leads into it. Its definitely not an extender.

Could it be the FireWire cable?

The USB and FireWire connectors so look somewhat similar, with the FireWire connector having an angled tip on one end rather than the rectangular connector used by USB.

Also, both USB and FireWire have two connector types - USB "A" and "B", and FireWire 4-pin and 6-pin.

Take a look at http://www.tripplite.com/products/cables/usb.cfm which has images of the various connectors and see if you can match it.

Hmm, actually it is a usb extender, just it has a proprietary connector. The keyboard has a groove tho so it fits.

I dont see why they bothered with the groove. I wanted to extend my Apple Pro mouse.. it took me some time to realise you needed to fit it at an angle and then it would go in.
