I have a PowerMac Dual 500 which doesn't recognize anything firewire -- fw drives or digital cameras. I have run an AppleCare disks which said there was nothing wrong with the hardware. But, I cannot even get the computer to boot into Target Disk mode so I can test the drives against another computer (like a PBG4). It just comes up into Open Firmware. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem too on my dual 1gig. It happened on or about the time I upgraded to 10.2.5. There seems to be a bunch of people this has happened to, some activity here and on the apple forums. I havent heard any solutions yet, other than calling apple, which I am getting close to doing...

This problem exhibited itself prior to the 10.2.5 udpate. I updated it to 10.2.5 to see if the problem would be solved by the update. I'm going to try installing OS X fresh with OS 9 too. Maybe the firmware needs updating -- since it comes up to the Firmware screen when you try to boot the Power Mac into Target Disk Mode.

I lost my FW interface just by plugging a device once when I was loaded with static electricity. Probably a spark killed the chip. Since then, when I boot in verbose I get the diagnosis (approximate) that says: "firewire Broken Phy".
Since then I have a PCI card...
