I want to add my old 60GB drive that is byting the dust (I am getting warrenty replacement), and know I want to put it in Bay 4 (below the SCSI ZIP drive).

What exra brackets do I need to attach the hard drive to the sled (I noticed it didn't fit when I temporaly put it int he CD-ROM Bay to transfer my files before it died)?

also since I am on a Rev A, I need to replace the IDE cable so that I can have a Master/slave. so what length is best? (Mac OS X only use). I have a 120GB Maxtor in the main drive bay.

Anyone who has done this please help me. the second drive will be for backup/archived files that are on CD.

thanks

Actually I'm not sure you're going to be able to do it.

You need a Rev. B or higher ROM for slave support. I recall reading something about one of the Jag updates enabling slave support even in Rev. A machines but I can't remember where.

Only other option would be getting an IDE PCI card.

It has been widely reported that this is not the case under OS X - it provides the necessary magic to make slave drives work even for Rev. A machines. Do a Google groups search and you'll find stories. The only problems I've read is that finding an IDE cable to do the job can be tricky - a normal 24 inch cable with connectors in the middle and at the end may not be able to snake around the case to both drives.

I could always move the CD-ROM to bay 4 and put the hard drive in Bay 2. Would that solve the problem (and also prevent the data corruption that happens with somer slave drives on Beige G3's)?

I bought a Lindy IDE cable with 3 plugs which was 1 metre long, and it is easily long enough to reach both a drive at the top and in bay 4 of my beige G3.

ok I have in a 24 inch cable and both drives are working perfectly (not one signle problem well other then the 60GB could die at any time.

I have heard of Data Corruption problems on the slave drive. any tests I can run to make sure the 24 inch cable ins't too short before I get too comfortable?

I am coping over the 700MB MWSF 2001 keynote as a test right now.
