Hi everyone,

I just got my machine back from the Apple store after having taken it in for lots of kernel panics. They ended up replacing both processors and the logic board on the machine.

Before I took it in, when I would boot the machine, the fans would kick into high gear and be rather loud. After getting into OS X, they would quiet down and the machine would be pretty silent.

Now, after having received my Mac back, the machine is totally quiet even during the boot up process.

Any idea why this may have happened? I am slightly worried that they forgot to plug something back in. I am also guessing that they may have replaced something else and didn't tell me about it, OR that there really was a problem with the procs that were causing the fans to kick in to high gear.

It's not a big issue, but I'm just curious as to why this may have changed.

Thanks
DDJ

Hmm, I was under the impression that the machine that I bought (FW800 in Feburary) was not effected by the recall of power supplies. Maybe they did replace it.. *shrug*

The FW800's have the new powersupply like the silencer kit, but the silencer kit also includes a quiter Papst CPU fan. The FW800 still uses the same Delta fan the older MDDs used. Maybe they replaced your Delta fan with a Papst fan?

You should probably turn the machine off, open the side so you can see the large CPU fan, and turn the machine on. Make sure that the fan is spinning, and make sure that a significant amount of air is being blown past where the heatsinks would be and towards the back of the case. Then shut the machine off and close it back up.

My dual 1.25/fw800 was also VERY loud when it booted up, but after the 10.2.5 update it's much more quiet.
