Gang: I tried searching but haven't found what I'm looking for. I'm sure somebody has done this and can tell me how it went.

I have a 333mhz tray loading iMac w/ original HD and new 256mb RAM (which I >thought< was the limit when I bought it). I'm interested in moving it to Jaguar.

How will it run? Am I going to be sorry? The machine will mostly be used for simple Office X tasks and web browsing, but I don't want it to be a slug. It will also be part of a wireless network via an attached AEBS.

Please give me you impressions of the usability of this machine with Jaguar. Any tips or warnings will be appreciated. Thanks!

Well it will be slow. But you get to use the iApps. I have upgraded my sisters and dads iMac to OS X, this is the deal. My dad's has 512MB and it helped, but it's still slow, and my sister has 256MB of ram with a 60GB HD at 7200rpm, most people say that a faster hard drive does not speed things up, but to me it seemed to make a difference, but still slow. She also as a CDRW installed which can burn at 8x, I am trying to get her to up the ram. I would expect some lagging in Office, I have a 466 iBook, and at times it gets sluggish, but it really is not a problem to use. I usually use an 867 QS, so they are all slow to me, but they are OK with it. If all your going to run is Office, I would just stay in OS 9 and use Office 2001. If you want the iApps and the other features of OS X, go for it, it will be useable, just understand that you're not seeing Jaguar at it's best.

I have an extremely upgraded tray loading iMac, it has 512 megs of ram, a 120 gig 7200rpm hd, and a 600mhz Harmoni G3 upgrade card. It runs OSX okay, but it's really limited by the video card in my opinion.

Ca$h, buddy? Bob, is that you, man? I know you are a Machead, too. Old Home week here, I guess!

What's been occupying your time lately?

Yep, it's me. Eh... well, my Subaru SVX is getting its ass kicked in Madison, planning for a wedding (this august), and trying not to let school kick my ass.

How about you man?

I have a 400MHz DVse. Runs Jag fine. I'd even say runs it well. Perfect little light duty computer (email/web/music server).

I've got a gig of memory but I've tried it with 512MB, and that runs fine too.

I stay away from the M$ myself, so I can't authoritatively comment of Office X. From what I know though, it will probably run like a slug.

If you can find leaner Office X equivalents, I'd say go for it without hesitation.

You can call me crazy, but I did install Jaguar on a 333Mhz iMac with 96Mb of RAM at work

I am amazed to see how well Jaguar runs on this crippled config... It definitely swaps a lot, but according to what I am seeing, it should be OK with 256Mb...

Hey, thanks, everybody. I really only need it to surf, run Word or Excel, and serve for my daughter's middle school machine. It's obviously not worth spending money on b/c for $1200 I can get a 15" flatpanel machine that's faster than my desktop G4. I just wanted to know if it would be usable.

I could keep it on 9.2.2 if I could get the printer working, because it wouldn't have to share then. Thanks again.

It runs great, I installed 10.2.3 on an 333 MHz blueberry with 256 megs of ram and a 6 gig fujitsu hard drive and it runs acceptable. Ripping cds is painfully slow but for basic tasks it's a great computer with 10.2.

My grape 333 has 384MB ram (they can now take up to 512 but the chips can be pricey) and a 40G 7200rpm drive dropped in it and it runs like a dream for all basic tasks including M$ Oriface. Even Photoshop although don't try anything too fancy or you'll have to take up smoking to fill in the time. It ran jolly well with the original HD and less ram too so go for it and you'll have a usabe machine for the next couple of years without shelling out excess coinage.

And of course there is the new eMac for $799. I gotta say this really makes spending anymore money on any of the original iMacs (barring prior invested iMacs, but maybe even then) a little silly. I mean a 17", 800Mhz G4, at 133Mhz sys bus, damn, if I think too hard on it I might just order one my accident.

no it doesn't. I installed OSX on my 333, then again with a 7200rpm hd and a 600mhz harmoni and tons more ram. It liked the upgrade, but even then, THE VIDEO CARD seems to be limiting the silkyness of OSX. Obviously you've never used OSX on a fast G4.
