I'm working on a project and need to know if the connector on the back of the old iMac DVD/CD drive is a normal 40-pin IDE connector. If not, do they make adapters?

Both HD and CD/DVD are standard units with standard connectors.

The connector on the DVD drive is not your standard IDE interface. There might be an adapter in there too somewhere, I don't know.
I did take some pictures of my iMac when it got a new hard drive, but I can't seem to find them. I'll post them if I find them.

Here, it looks like there's already a narrow 50 pin to ATAPI interface adapter on the drive...

I found this pic on ebay for a (completed auction) item sold specifically as an imac dvd drive:

I'm thinking they all have that narrow 50 pin connector, but have an adapter.

I never understood whey they used that adapter. What's wrong with hooking it up normally?

I'm using the drive in a completely different project. All I need is for it to have that small 50-pin connector...not the wide-looking IDE.

They use the small connector because the slot-loading drives are notebook drives which have a minature unified data and power connector.
