Hi!
I am a student and I am about to treat myself to a new system when my tax returns come in. (that and my holiday/vacation money)
I was looking to buy a Dual 1.42 , stock RAM (512), 120Gb, SuperDrive, Combo Drive, BlueTooth and Airport Extreme with the modem built into the basestation (so no modem in the G4). Along with that I want a 17" screen from Apple.
Being a student, I would be more than happy to pay Apple the $99 and get a big, fat discount on this rig. But: before I sign up and pay Apple the $99 I would like to know what this system would cost me.
Is there anyone here who can tell me?
Any tips would be very much appreciated.

Go to the ADC website and click on Hardware Purchase Program. It will then ask you to select a country, maybe agree to a statement (I don't remember), and then it will take you to the ADC store. That's how I got my dual 867.
By the way, to get the discount, you need to have proof that you are in/registered for a developer class. Once you order, you need to fax that proof in along with your current student ID. Then they will review that info and approve your order. Good luck and happy shopping!

Hey..
you're going to LOVE your Duel 1.42.
I just got mine about 10 days ago now...
I was very nervous as I had heard they were noisey, but mine is not. I had delayed getting a new G4 for 3 years, I had a G4 400 previous to this which I still plan on using as a back up from time to time.
And.. I'm putting my money where my mouth is, I just yesterday ordered ANOTHER 1.42 for my Mom. (Yes I'm a very good son).
She had a old G3 beige that finally bit the dust.
Alot of people are waiting on the new chip that Apple is allegedly working on... I'm excited about that, but am so thrilled with my new G4, I know you will be very happy.
I've burned 26 DVD's in 10 days. (yes...you can now get very inexpensive DVD-R's for under 1 buck each).
Minor issues:
In that time, iDVD has crashed on me twice, and iMovie crashes when you try to import an older movie file longer than 10 minutes.
The keyboard is bright white unless you specify black when you order it. I prefer the black keyboards myself, but thats up to you.
I would get the extra RAM if you can get it. Most places offer 500 megs extra for like a service charge, but not sure if thats a possiblitiy where you are getting yours.
Good luck!

Even though I appreciate your replies, I really only wanted to know what the ADC price is for this rig. No one seems to be able to tell me.
Is there someone here who can tell me?
Cheers!

Dual 1.42 == $2,159.00 USD.
I just clicked through the ADC web-site. (Same as you could have done.)
I'm not trying to be rude (so please don't take it as such)... but I'm not sure what the problem was ??

I am sorry, but I have not been completely clear here. My bad. I am a student in Holland, so as far as I know there is NO online store for ADC members. In Holland we have to call te Apple Store to buy with the ADC discount.
So what I would really like to know very much is this: When I buy the $99 ADC Student thingie, would that allow me to buy Apple Hardware over here in Holland? It doesn't actually say anything on this subject on the web (AFAIK).
The discount on the top of the line Powermac is almost exactly 20%, which is a lot!

The UK also doesn't allow online purchases. However, when I've called the store for a quote (out of 3 tries, twice they actually gave a price - the other time they wanted a membership number first) the price was exactly 20% less than the standard store price.
I think that's a fairly good estimate - it was the same for a TiBook, 17" iMac and a 12" PB.
Take 20% off whatever it would cost at the Holland Apple store.

Right, what you'll have to do is call your Apple Store and get them to apply the ADC Discount. The discount is 20% off, so it does take quite a bit off the cost of a new Mac. Let us know if you get it!

Ok, very cool indeed! Now I'll just have to call the Dutch Apple Store and have them apply the ADC discount. That is, after I get my tax return and holiday money.
I mentioned that I am a student, but I don't actually develop stuff on Apples, as I am only a communications student. I DO use my iBook all the time for Illustrator, Photoshop, and stuff.. Does anyone know if this is a problem?
Does anyone here, who received the discount, actually develop stuff on Apples for their study?
I also would like to know if the G4 I want to order (1.42, 512MB,120GB, AE,BT,DVD-R,DVD/CD-R,9700Pro) will be able to play UT2003 and Doom 3. This, AFAIK, the fastest Mac available...
The machine costs the insane amount of EUR4291,14 in Holland... After ADC discount that would amount to EUR3432,91 .... Which is still an awful lot of money, but hey: it buys you a G4!!!

strictly speaking you have to be in a developer related class, ie a class that deals with computers in developing stuff, or something remotely connected to that. However, sometimes they check, sometimes they don't. Me and two of my friends have ordered through ADC without ever giving proof that we take such classes to apple, and gotten our 20% off (we are in norway). But we do actually study for a bachelor in computer science, so we would've gotten it through fair and square. Point is though, we never showed proof.

Does anyone know if CompSci faculty can get these discounts, or is it students only?
(I know that a while back it was a student only thing, so I'm just wondering if anything has changed.)

Unfortunately, it's strictly for Students. Faculty and staff wouldn't be eligible for a "ADC Student Membership", but could purchase the more expensive alternatives: the Select or Premier Memberships.
