I have the new "OS9 Bootable" non Firewire 800 G4.
(MDD 1.25Ghz DP 120GB HD
I have also installed an additional Deskstar 180GXP 180GB HD.

I want to have a single separate system on each drive.

( OS9.2.2 ONLY on the primary HD and NOT classic via OSX )
( OSX 10.2.5 on the 180GB HD )

How can this be achieved?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

You've got 9.2.2 on the original drive still, right? So to get rid of OS X you need to delete these files:

.Trashes
.hidden
.vol
Applications
Library
Network
System
Users
Volumes
bin
cores
dev
etc
mach
mch.sym
mach_kernel
private
sbin
tmp
usr
var

You might need to use ResEdit to see some of the invisibile files. BTW, this list was made by a member of MacNN, but I forgot to keep his name with the list.

Then you need to install OS X on your new drive. I'm not sure if new Macs come with OS X discs or just the restore CDs. Speaking of the new hard drive, have you initialized it yet? If you need help, report back and ask.

A more complete list, with (notes in parenthesis):
Code:
.DS_Store (OSX Finder folderprefs data) .FBCIndex (9 Finder doesn't use this file) .FBCLockFolder (9 Finder doesn't use this folder) .hidden (list of files/folders for X Finder to hide from you) .Trashes (9 Finder doesn't use this folder) .vol (another mount point for volumes, by code number) .VolumeIcon.icns automount Applications (X apps and some Carbon apps) bin (unix binaries) cores dev (devices that X will recognize) Developer (Developer Tools installed) error.log (this doesn't exist on a Mac, have your eyes checked) etc (unix root config files, etc) File Transfer Folder?? Library (most core X system files) mach mach_kernel (the OSX kernel. bow down) mach.sym Network private (actual location of etc, tmp, and var) resources (documents for newbies to read) sbin (more unix binaries) sw (GIMP installed, maybe other X11 stuff too) System (core OSX files Apple wants left alone. Get hacking in here) tmp (this is where the QT plugin hides .mov downloads) Users (the little people who don't own the box) usr (user-installed unix stuff) var (various unix items, including root's home folder) Volumes (X mount point for non-boot partitions & volumes)
Not all files/folders will be present on any given partition. Once the above files/folders are deleted, you can drag the contents of the Mac OS 9 folder to the root of the HD. This step isn't actually needed, but the extra directory just makes filepaths and navigation one step longer.

I do not have ResEdit to delete "root files" however after deleting what the system would allow - my primary hard drive is running OS9.2.2 nicely.

Thank you.

Good to hear it's up and running.

If you'd like to get rid of these files, you can get ResEdit here.

I have never used this app before. Can you describe in detail how to delete invisible files?

Thanks again.

You can do it in ResEdit from the menu File -> Get File/Folder Info, but there is an easier way. Go to Alsoft's free download utilities here. Toggle the download selector to download the Change Visibility Contextual Menu Item. Unstuff, drop on closed System folder, allow the Finder to move it to the Contextual Menu Items folder. Reboot.

Afterwards, option-click on the hard drive. Among the other menus, you will get a Change Visibility submenu showing all invisible files or folders at the root level of the HD. Select any one and let go. It will be made visible, after which you can trash it like any normal file or folder.
