Hi!
I've got a yuestion regarding Classic on the probably upcoming PowerMacs with IBM PPC970:
As far as I know, some adaptations are necessary to make OS X work on the PPC970, so I wonder if this means that Classic would also need to be worked on? Or is it sufficient if the underlying layers of OS X are adapted for Classic to work? If not, I wonder if this means that Apple is going to drop OS 9 completely, even as Classic, since I can't imagine they would be willing to put that amount of work into development of OS 9. What do you think?

From what I've read, the 970 is quite compatible with 32-bit code (what we're using now), so there shouldn't be a problem with 32-bit apps, including Classic.
In order for OS X and 3rd party apps to take full advantage of a 64-bit processor, it will need some modifications. But things *should* run fine without modification.

bradoesch is correct. The PowerPC 970 chip is a PowerPC chip after all, and uses the same PowerPC instruction set (with the likely addition of many 64-bit instructions to the existing 32-bit instruction set) and although it is a 64-bit chip it is backward compatible with 32-bit apps. You should be able to run MacOS X and all MacOS X compatible apps on it without any major modification.

Classic maybe, but I bet you can say goodbye to booting into OS 9.

Your a little behind in the news, we've already said goodbye to booting into OS 9 with the new FW800 PowerMacs introduced a few months back.

Note that with every version of OS X, Classic gets "thinner" - less directly hardware, more standard system calls. In 10.1, it accessed disks directly. In 10.2, it uses native APIs for that (which means that you can eg read files from NFS shares in Classic under 10.2, but not in 10.1). For each version, Classic will get less and less hardware dependant. If there is anything left that stops Classic from running on the 970, I'm sure it can be fixed in 10.3.
