alright, so i keep changing my mind about what to get on ebay. i'm looking to get a g3 system and upgrade it later with a fast chip and some more ram. then i starts seeing g3 cases for cheap and mother boards for cheap. i was wondering if it's a big ordeal to build your own mac desktop. and if i do will it have non stop problems like a windows pc cause i'll be doing it myself.

here's what i think i need:

g3 case and power supply
logic board
hard drive
memory

any help would be greatly appreciated

oh yeah, i'm looking to get a revision 2 logic board, i've seen pictures of the board and i don't see where the firewire ports are.
is the firewire another board that fits on top of the logic board?

I built a rev2 B&W G3 from ebay parts. I used a standard ATX case and power supply (both need modifications). The firewire ports are on a small daughtercard which is sold seperately. The built-in firewire on the B&W had issues anyway, and you might be better off with a PCI firewire card (that's what I did, it was actually cheaper than buying the daughtercard). You'll also need the front panel board (it has the power and reset switches on it). If you use a G3 case, the front panel board should already be in there.

I used a 500mhz G3 I bought from OWC, but you might be able to find one for cheaper on ebay too. In fact, you may want to throw a G4 in there, but you have to do something to the firmware first I think (Apple deliberately tried to disable G4 support on the G3 mobo). Maybe you could find a Yikes! motherboard?

You might want an optical drive too.

What kind of G3 do you want to build? The Platinum (beige) kind, or the Blue & White (B&W) kind? It does make a difference. The platinum model logicboards don't have USB or Firewire. You can always add a PCI card, but that cost's money.
Also, do you really think it would be cheaper to buy all the component parts that to just purchase a completed machine?
Just some things to consider.
