My server has been locking up a bit too much lately. I was thinking of what I could use to replace it. I don't need alot of power or anything. I wouldn never wanna psring for a lowend powermac, its way too much money and way overpowered for a web/mail server. My server also has some big HDs in it for storage. No such thing in the eMac. But still, if I kept my old server around for network storage. And I would't need PCI slots becuase I just ordered a hardware router anyway, a new $750 base model emac, even without a RAM upgrade, would make a perfect Web/Mail/DNS Server! I wish apple would make some kind of cheap tower, even if it was like a 1 GHz G3, one or two PCI slots. Something like that. If I was using linux I could build a PC with specific specs I wanted like a small SCSI raid or something, but with a Mac, you have to PAY tons of money to get something really fast. Know what would be even better, if they just kept more of the older models for less money when they upgraded. Like a dual 800 for a very affordable price. Or even really old dirty cheap but still brand new dual 533's!

Just pick up an old PCI PowerMac, stick a G3 upgrade in it, and an ATA card so you can use IDE hard drives, and yer off!
I have a PowerMac 7500 and 4400, got both nearly for free, put a couple of hundred into both of them, and now they make great servers (running NetBSD on the 4400, OS 9 on the 7500).
The eMac would make a great backup desktop machine for portable users, though.

thats exactly what i have, a 9500 clone upgraded etc etc, and it freezes kind of alot. plus i've had troulbe finding a 10/100 ethernet card that works in OS X, i got a farallon card but it made the mac crash daily. Plus the older the system gets, the more unreliable it becomes. Plus 66 MHz bus vs 133 MHz bus... The eMac is goona be alot nicer and all said and done, its not goona cost a whole lot more.
