I have a dual 867 G4. I ordered 2 weeks ago the new power supply kit from Apple. I received it 3 days ago and changed the power supply/fan yesterday evening.

My first reaction when I started my Mac was "wow". So silent ! It was paradise. I couldn't believe how silent my mac was :-)

But after a few minutes of use, a fan noise started and became more and more noisy. Finally it became as noisy as the sound I had with the old fan. The pitch was a little different however.

Then I upgraded to Mac OS 10.2.6 and the paradise turned into hell : my Mac tried to go to sleep mode every 10 seconds ! I don't know if it has to do with the new fan/power supply (and too much heat ?) ... or the new OS.

I started my Mac this morning and everything seemed to be ok (no noise, no panic on the screen) but I don't know what to do if the mess comes back this evening (noise and sleep mode).

Any advice on this ? Thank you (as usual)

the irony!

That sounds exactly like my quicksilver. I turn it on, and for the first 5 minutes it's always so quiet and polite.. and then suddenly WHAARRRRRRRR it sounds like the damn thing is trying to overtake a V8 on a freeway or something.
In a realm beyond site, the sky shines gold, not blue, there the Triforce's might makes mortal dreams come true.

Try replacing the new CPU fan with the old one. The combination of the new power supply and the old CPU fan fixed it for me.

Was your CPU fan hard to get in? I know I have heard of similar problems with kits that Apple sent that the grill was put on the wrong side of the CPU fan, causing it to not cool the CPU when installed. You might make sure that it is actually blowing across your CPUs.

Geekwagon : yes the fan was hard to fit. I had to bend the 3 little pieces of metal. But it worked fine at the end and I respected the Apple guidelines so I guess the fan is properly installed.

But I suspect that the start of the fan is due to a overheating of the system ... IMHO.

MDA : I'll try my mac tonight when I get home. I'll try your solution if the fan noise starts again (why wouldn't since it did it yesterday).

I called Apple and they told me to go to a repair center with my Mac. It must be a hardware problem.

My mac is noisier now than before.

I'll keep u posted and thanks for your help !

Glad to hear it.

My MDD still bothers me. I think my next mod attempt will be a Panaflo 120mm fan.

I was amazed at the silence of my MDD after the Apple PS swap.
I had prevously replaced my PS fans and the 120MM with a quiet pabst which reduced the noise level considerably.

When it gets warm the CPU fan cycles up but it's better than before.
