I have just installed a new ATA disc on my beige G3. This machine has also an old 8G SCI disk.
I tried to mount the ATA disc as a Master but it was not possible only it was possible to mount it as a slave.
So I would like to know how can I disable the SCI and use the ATA as a master disk.
very new in this.....
thank you.

I'm a little confused. When you say "SCI" I assume you actually mean "SCSI", which would mean you've got one drive connected to via SCSI (either the on-board or a add-in card) and another on one of the two IDE connectors. On the other hand, your statements regarding master and slave make it sound like you've actually connected both drives via IDE.

Which is it? If you've got both drives connected to the same ribbon cable, and that cable goes to an IDE connector, your problem is probably jumpers on the drives themselves. IDE drives can be set to master, slave, or cable select; you may have a conflict (both drives set to master, or both drives set to cable select).

On the other hand, if you mean that you've got one drive connected via SCSI and the other via IDE, and you can't make the IDE drive a boot drive, that's a different matter altogether. Your problem there is probably that on Beige G3s you have to install OS X on a partition smaller than 8 gig, and that partition must be the first partition on the drive. If you've installed a shiny new 127 gig drive and the OS X installer won't let you install, then that's your problem and you'll need to partition.

More info, please.

Thank you for your orientation, yes I have a SCSI drive connected to via SCSI a add-in card and the new one is in the IDE connection, both are connected with different ribbon.

So after reading your comments, I think I need to partition.

PS sorry for the confusion with bad spelling of "SCSI"

If I am not mistaken (I am using a Beige G3 as my primary and only Mac), Use the SCSI 8GB for Mac OS X, and then ise the IDE in slave as your Data drive. then the IDE won't need to be partitoned. and the SCSI drive will help run Mac OS X a bit faster.

Do you mean to imply that a beige G3 will boot OSX off a SCSI drive? I don't have any SCSI drives on my beiges but have always hated the IDE/8GB/master/0bus requirement. Could I avoid all this by setting up a SCSI OSX boot disk? Does it need to be internal? OSX has trouble picking up SCSI external disks on all 3 of my bieges. Sure would like some clarification on this from someone who has done it,

I have a beige G3 with a SCSI drive connected via SCSI add-card, and boots perfectly with OS X.
However, I added one IDE drive to boot with OSX because my older-noisy SCSI drive was driving me crazy everytime I turned on my computer.

Funny.
I had an old 20 SC holding up the monitor which OS 9 would never mount, but OS X Server (1.2!) did.

Ok so you can boot off a SCSI card. But is anyone actually booting OSX off a motherboard SCSI drive either internal or external? No speculators please - don't tell me what Apples says you can do or what you think you should be able to do. Is anyone actually using a mobo SCSI to boot OSX?
