Hi, gang: I know this is a long shot, but my G4/450 has recently quit sleeping. Power Saver CP was and is still set to sleep the monitor after 15 minutes and the CPU after 45 minutes.

The only change that I made recently (that I remember/aware of) was to set my AEBS to hang up the internet connection of the AEBS modem after 30 minutes idle, whereas previously it had been set to never hang up.

I haven't set that back yet as an experiment, but does anybody have any idea about how they two might be related? Or what else is might be?

Have you recently added any new peripherals?

Nope! Nor have I really done any software tinkering at all. I'm baffled.

See if you can sleep your Mac manually. Push the power button once, it should bring up a menu with Sleep as an option. Also, from the Finder menu Special -> Sleep. If you are in OSX, go to the Apple menu -> Sleep.

If you can sleep it manually, then nothing is holding sleep up. Trash the energy saver preferences file, reboot, and reset your prefs for sleep.

What is the name of the actual preference file you are referring to?

OS9: System Folder/Preferences/Energy Saver Preferences
OSX: Good question, I'm still looking for it. Hope Apple didn't move it into the pram.

Well, after a couple days, it seems to have decided to sleep again... but problems that fix themselves usually come back by themselves. At any rate, the machine is currently on 9.2.1 and I will do as suggested with the Energy saver prefs.

Thanks, folks!

My dual 450 won't go to sleep or wake up from sleep if the external SCSI zip drive is unplugged from the AC line. Simply plugging it immediately fixes the sleep problems... strange, but you might try disconnecting peripherals to see if they are causing the problem.

Found it.

OS9: System Folder/Preferences/Energy Saver Preferences
OSX: /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist

Apple made an essential system preferences file invisible. Excellent planning there.

btw, there are a lot of other prefs in the OSX file besides energy saver prefs. It would be better to edit in PropertyListEditor than to toss this file. Just delete the Energy Saver section, save, then open Energy Saver pane and specify new prefs.
