G'day from Oz.

I'm setting up an 80 Gig HD + Jaguar on a tray loading iMac for my Sister & 4 kids.

However, I've found I need both Jaguar AND System 9 in the first 8 Gig.

I've got them residing together on the one partition.

Trouble is, the Option-key on boot does not give a selection of OS's as it does on slot loaders, nor does it boot straight into 9 as it does on Beige G3's. It apparently won't work even if I create two partitions.

As they have some programs that don't work with Jag, they'll be booting into both about 50/50. Using Startup Disk control panel is a real pain.

Is there any freeware/shareware/Applescript that will allow booting into either system on bootup, even if it means two partitions?

Regards

No, I don't think so. The boot loader resides in the firmware, and unless you want to patch your firmware, you're screwed. Startup Disk is the only option left.

Hmmm... My iBook used to not give a choice of OS on Option boot, but then I upgraded to Jaguar, and installed OS 9 on a separate partition. The Option boot now offers a choice.

It's not the same machine, but I still wonder why it won't work on your iMac .

This post isn't an answer per se, but before you say "Why bother?" it is interesting.

I had a RevB iMac with a NewerTechnology G4/433 Mhz upgrade card in it. Now I also had a Pioneer A104 External Superdrive with no way of upgrading the firmware. I hard-wired the Superdrive to one of the internal IDE Channels by running a cable from inside the iMac to the drive. The weirdness starts here. I was able to update the firmware (the drive now effectively an internal drive). I was also able to run iDVD 2.0. But I also installed OSX from the same drive and discovered a number of things but for your sake most significantly that Option Boot worked and I got the F12 Eject Symbol in my menu bar. Jaguar was clearly very confused about what machine it thought it was installing onto and doesn't just check the Gestalt ID when loading.

Now I apologise for the limited relevance of this except that I DID have Option Boot on a RevB iMac although under rather bizarre circumstances!

It's because he's got 9 and X on the same partition. The option-boot method lists partitions that are bootable, but it won't list the same partition more than once, even if it's got two operating systems on it.
