We received word that two large shipments of Power PC 970 processors went to Foxconn in Taiwan, under a purchase order from Apple computer. Twenty thousand 1.4Ghz PPC 970's and forty thousand 1.6Ghz PPC 970's have already arrived in their hands. IBM's inventory contains fifty thousand 1.8 Ghz PPC 970's, of which forty thousand are destined for Foxconn tomorrow (Wednesday).

IBM has listed as pending 2Ghz parts as well, which means that it will be in inventory within a month if their fab in East Fishkill produces sufficient volumes of them, and from what we hear they should be in stock by mid-June. Apple has stated that they need a minimum of 40 thousand in order to make a production run, and from what we understand this is for dual processors because normally their production runs are twenty thousand units. It is not IBM's policy to comment on other vendor's unreleased products. We have also been briefed that the PPC 970 will come in 2.3 and 2.5Ghz configurations by the end of the year, and as well some preliminary specs on the upcoming 980 processor, which is a Power 5 derivative

Is Foxconn the company that makes some of the PowerMac stuff? Just wondering.

Anyways, I'll believe it when I see it. Isn't Looprumors one of the less reliable rumour sites?

The only time that Looprumors really "screwed up" was when they posted pictures of Steve Jobs at an Intel meeting, claiming that Apple was gonna use Intel processors. Later they found out that that wasn't the case and the person, who had sent this info (and the pictures) didn't know what he was talking about.

I think the pictures turned out to be real, but Steve was visiting because Pixar was switching it's render farms to Intel processors.

We haven't got the 1.6Ghz yet and we're been baited with 2Ghz. And 2.3-2.5Ghz. AND the 980???

No wonder Powermac sales are down .

As anyone actually at the meeting would have known. It sounds like LoopRumors is getting its "information" third hand.

Anyways, does anyone have more info on Apple's relationship to Foxconn? Otherwise known as Hon Hai, they apparently made Apple's CRT iMacs and eMacs, but I don't know any more than that.

Hmmm, lies, damn lies, and rumor sites...

Very rarely indeed do we get the whole story when faced with a rumor. There is ususally an 'element' of truth but nothing more...

In short, the 970's will be ready when Steve says they are ready... After 2 years of 'rumors' and speculation, whatever comes out is possibly going to be a let down anyway... I'm sure people will start the obligatory bitching threads because it is not a docdecehedron or something.

For me, the sweetness is in the anticipation, but even that is now getting boring...

Just release the machines already.

Peace,

Marc

Hmmm. PPC 970 starting at 1.42 GHZ sounds
very fishy. IBM said 1.8GHZ. And it is
also fishy that the PPC 970 starts at the
same clock rate as the current G4s end.

This rumor is tooooooooo fishy for me to
belive.

Just as we got the iMacs, iPod and tiBooks
apple will eventually hit the us with a
power mac no one expected

Actually IBM said initial chips will scale to 1.8Ghz. That means they could start at 1.2, 1.4 or 1.6 Ghz.

IBM states that here http://www.ibm.com/news/us/2002/10/14.html

Don't where you got it they would start at 1.8 Ghz.

If this rumor is even close to being true, my wife is going to be very mad at me very soon (when I walk in with a new dual 1.8GHz PPC970 PowerMac)

Despite that a 1GHz 970 is faster than a 1.42 GHz G4 it will from a marketing point of wiew look better if the 970 clocks at least at the speed of the G4.
And 970 at around 1.5 GHz will beat the G4 by a a lot
IBM PPC 970:
SPECint2000 781 @ 1.5 GHz (corresponding to a G4 @2.65 GHz)
SPECfp2000 876 @ 1.5 GHz (corresponding to a G4@5.0 GHz)
So Apple hardly have to wait until the 2.5 GHz 970 come around before replacing the G4. A single 1.4 970 will beat the stuffing out of a dual 1.42 G4 in most applications and "only" be on par on some (assuming that SPEC marks are relevant)

SP 1.4 DP 1.6 from the start and DP1.8 soon after look like the biggest performance leap in the Macintosh history. I do not mind that even faster 970 and 980 and so on will arrive later

Your numbers may possibly be (far) too optimistic. Check this thread.

So what are you saying exactly?
