These corecribs seem like such a good idea... especially since I am limited in funding since I am a poor college student. I am a design student and I mainly use photoshop, illustrator, indesign, quark along with itunes, safari and iphoto. I am running jaguar on a Blue.... well Black and White G3 400 with 896mb ram and a 30gb hard drive. It seems to be ok.. I was planning on just getting the 800mhz zif and being happy with my sexy Apple case painted black with the clear.
But along comes these corecribs giving me the option for agp and a G4 800 for only a few hundred more then the processor upgrade... aghh what to do.. I need some happy b&w users to convince me to stay and that everything is okay.. hahaha

Stick with your G3 till you can afford a ?real' upgrade (aka PPC970). The 800 MHz upgrade will be about 50-100 % more power. But think of this: a new PowerMac that you can buy today will give you 4-5 times the performance. Simply don't. Save you money for a real upgrade.

I'll be interested to see how the CoeServer works out. I've been looking to convert an older G4 anyway, so this might be just the thing.
Back oT...
The advantage to buying a new machine is that you can sell the old one. Or use it as a server if you have broadband.
There's also the option of checking eBay for a used PowerMac. Or someplace like Mac of All Trades

Buy a low cost upgrade now (500G4 or 800G3), and change your computer next february, when 2nd generation (=debugged & tuned) 970 arrive.
It is rarely profitable to pay a premium to debug a brand new (and unoptimised) config.
Remember the first PowerPC / beige G3 / dark G4...
The best config always came in the following 6 months.

I got severl beige G3s and one of the first Sawtooth G4s (450). All are still in commission and running great...
If you are strapped for cash, don't even bother getting a cheap upgrade...just wait 'til u have enough to get the cheapest 970...you'll be plenty happy 3 months after that purchase, when major software companies tweak their software enough to take advantage of the new chip (including Apple)
I've been seriously flirting with the idea of a dual 1GHz upgrade for my Sawtooth, but figure I'll throw in another $700 'n wait a little longer

G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

I concur with these suggestions to wait. If possible, get some more RAM. Its cheap and OS X loves RAM. Doing design work, I bet you routinely overrun your physical memory limit. iPhoto alone can use all of my 1.5 gigs and then immediately becomes quite unresponsive...

I don't agree, but if you've watched my posts in the "corecrib is a scam section" you would know why.
I bought the Crib because I'm a new Mac user. I had a Beige G3 junked from work, I bought the Crib as a temp. machine to hold me over until the new G5, or whatever they call it, arrives.
I'm not sure about you, but using a G4 400 was painful to me. The money I spent on the Crib was worth it.
I upgrade computers often though, so buying a Crib to keep for a year is normal for me. Good Luck with your decision.
