Doesn't this pretty much set it in stone now? There's pretty much no question of Apple using the 970 now, huh?

Well, IBM intended to use the Power4 with Linux, and Linux also uses GCC. I don't see this as proof that Apple will use it. However, it would be a necessary step in getting the 970 into a Mac. Of course, there is mention of a vector processing unit in that file.

Hey, at least Apple has a PPC 970 compiler to throw in the OSX 10.3 developer tools now.

Sorry, but does Power4-compatibility necessarily includes 970-compatibility? Just wondering...

The biggest differences between the Power4 and the PPC 970 are:

1) The 970 only has one core per die
2) The 970 has less cache
3) The 970 has a vector processing unit

Both chips are 64-bit PPC processors that share the same ISA (well, except for the additional VPU instructions in the 970). I think I can say confidently that a Power4 compiler will produce code executable on a PPC 970.

Now, would that Power4 compiler produce code optimized for the 970? NO. Especially since support for the VPU wouldn't be there.

From the description in the file:

Scheduling description for IBM Power4 and PowerPC 970 processors
I took that to mean both.

I'd say this is a good sign. I really can't wait to hear more at WWDC
Be happy.

I think gcc would get 970 support whether Apple was using it or not. gcc really has nothing to do with Apple, any more than any other PPC platform. Apple is one of the many vendors that distribute gcc, though one of few that could also potentially make use of PPC. PPC Linux would need this without a doubt.
