Apple needs to boost sales, this might do it for them.

Does the new cube come with spiderweb cracks? :-)

Expect it to cost 10 grand like Apple's last anniversary model... hehe...

A neo-cube would be rather cool, if they could make it powerful enough to justify the price they'll undoubtedly jack up. I wouldn't buy it, but I know people who might .
Be happy.

as a Cube owner i have to say:

as an anniversary "collectors item" it would be a killer! put in a quiet fan ("disbeliever! hang'em up high!!"), a 1.2 GHz proc, a superdrive, 120 Gb hd, a GeForce2, make it shiny white/NeXT black/titanium, sell it for 1499$ - it's mine!!!

I'd like at least a 1.5Ghz processor, and even the new PowerMacs have more than a GeForce2! Give us at least a Radeon 9800 Pro.

Interesting. You'll remember that when Apple put the original Cube on ice, their press release specifically stated that an updated version might reappear in the future.

That would be excellent if the future were now.

If this article is true, Apple isn't really working on a new Cube. They are just making a limited number of computers for their 20th anniversary that may use a similar acrylic to the Cube. Unfortunately this would not be a regular production model.

I really loved the little blighter when it was about but I really wished it was more like flatened brick.
This machine actually impacted in the wintel market with brick shaped boxes like

and some of my pc friends went and got them for which I feel rather envious but then maybe we wont have to wait too much longer whether Apple brings one out or maybe the engineers over at

will see the light apparently OSX will run on these boards via Linux.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't care what Apple ships until they are using the 970.

No more of this unexpandable crap!
We have enough of a consumer line. Give us new F*A*S*T pro-machines!
I my opinion this is the area of the market where people are waiting to upgrade. Pro's keep holding and holding and holding off for that new machine.(the 970 based machines)
Sorry to say but as far as "pro" software( 3d and video) are concerned the P4 line smokes the G4, hands down.
I have seen it with my own eyes. It aint pretty.

As much as I love my Cube, I've got to agree. the iMac flat panel more than fills the shoes of the Cube.

I always loved the look and idea of the Cube, but the price was too high for most people. I hope Apple makes this 20th Edition Cube affordable for the masses (unlike their 20th Aniversery Mac of the past). Now I'll just have to talk my parents in to replacing their old original iMac with a new Cube (so I can play with it on the holidays).

I would love this to be true. I recently splashed out on Cube after coveting one since they came. The head has always ruled my heart but eventually I just had to give in.

Guess I might have to start saving again...

Gahh, I hope not! I want a 970 Power Mac at a reasonable price! With COOLING! And EXPANSION POSSILBITIES!

The Cube is cool, but it *is* a gimmick. I think doing a limited run of anniversary machines is an execellent idea.
Be happy.

The only thing that made the cube a gimmick was its price. If priced more reasonably, I think the world is ready for tiny and silent computers. It was CPU and AGP expandable with firewire and USB.

Tiny (cube like) computing is inevitable. The only question is how long it will take for the price point to reach consumer feasibility.

I really hope this is true, even as a limited edition release. Though I also have the sad reality voice telling me this isn't likely.

I love my Cube, and it will probably remain my only Mac desktop for a long time. I have upgraded the graphics to a QE capable card with dual monitor support, and also upgraded the hard drive to a larger, quieter one. I am now planning my budget to buy a CPU upgrade card later this year to extend the life of my cube. I may also consider the new Superdrive upgrade for the cube, but for now, I'll keep the base DVD-Rom.

While many people scream the need for expansion, few people actually use it. How many people out there own PowerMac towers with PCI cards in use? How many people out there really have a need for more then one internal hard drive and one internal optical drive? As I said, I know there is a few people out there who do. For the rest, a small form factor box is perfect. If Apple took a few hints from companies like Shuttle, they could probably build a slightly larger cube that would meet the needs of 90% of the Powermac owners.

Actually I do. I bought an additional USB card and a ATA 100 card. And I'm looking to add a 3rd party sound card and replace the usb for a USB 2.0 card and firewire 800. For me, I've had too many different machines not to buy one and not have the ability to expand it.

It's great that Apple has a lot of the most requested ports built in, but people who buy PowerMacs will buy it for the ability to expand it, whether now or later.

But if Apple is working on a Cube, it's a ways down the pike. Those 970s need to go out first and in force. If they want to slap a few 970s into a limited cube run next year, more power to them; but I want it to go out after the laptops (that's what I want)...

Has MacWhispers ever been right when it went out on a limb like this? It has been correct about some things, but these things were all over other rumors sites as well.

I may be wrong, but MacWhispers has yet to hit the mark on anything that others haven't first.

I'd be skeptical.

Power Mac towers are the most cost effective way to get a Mac with a separate display. I have seen lab after lab of Macs with just the default internals, attached to cheapo displays.

Expandability is no issue there.

For both myself and our labs, I'd rather buy a Mini Tower Mac than the current G4 Tower giants. If the smallest case was the cheapest of the product line, so would many others. Space savings alone would be meaningful.

In the meanwhile, for me, my Cube will do.

MacWhispers did get the USB2/Firewire combo cable right a few moths ago.

Personally, I'd be very interested in buying a new Cube. I would like to buy one off of eBay and upgrade it, but that would be too expensive for me. Plus, it wouldn't have a 970.

If Apple relaeased "Cube 2" I think it would have succesful sales. I think it could be marketed to the iMac crowd, and to us power users who want to be cool.
