Here is something I'm puzzling over. I inherited a PowerMac G4 400 (w/AGP) and I'm doing a little restoration project to make it work better with Final Cut Pro. I'm a student with a new baby on the way so I can't really justify a new machine at the moment.

Rigth now the machine is stock (512mb RAM, 20gb HD etc.) . The only problem I am having is I can't seem to shut down the computer. When I choose shut down form the menu it will shut down, and then restart itself immediately.

Any thoughts what is going on?

I'm not sure why I called the topic "2 questions" - probably because I just got up and I'm still sleepy.

That should be a nice machine. I have a 450mhz version of the same thing. And congratulations on the upcoming baby!

I've vaguely heard of this happening before, but of course I can't recall where. Try the "Power Saver" control panel, and see if it is set to "Automatically restart after power failure". That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head.

My iMac, on the other hand, shuts down but will not sleep. I have no idea about that one.

When I was an Apple Tech we replaced a lot of frnot panel power switch boards on those for similar reasons.

I can vaguely remember hearing similar stories... and it sounds like a new power switch could be needed.

Has the Mac got Gig Ethernet? If so, I used to have the same model machine (Mystic).

Over all, it was very cool... one of the best Macs I have had. Well worth a cheap repair.

My B&W G3 sometimes decides it is not ready to be shut down as well.. but it doesn't do it all the time. Every now and then it will do it everytime and other times it shuts down fine. So I am curious as well.

hmmm...power switch

That makes sense. I will probably get it repaired at some point. To be honest, it doesn't really effect me too much in that I tend to leave the machine on most of the time. It also stays off (when I shut it down) just long enough to pull out the plug and keep it from restarting when I do decide to turn it off. It may not be terribly elegant, but it seems to work (at least until I can get it fixed).

Thanks

I assume you've already tried zapping the PRAM?
