What does this mean? It started randomly about two weeks ago this noise that is coming from my hard drive inside the G4/733 Tower. The noise of the drive is making like a 'chirping' effect, or like a click up and down type sound. It's not a fast chirp, but a ka click ka click sound. It caused me to actually have to restart this morning. It's freaking me out... should I be concerned?

BACKUP YOUR DATA RIGHT NOW!!!!! (if you can't do this, then go to a store and buy a new hard drive... and DON'T USE YOUR COMPUUTER AT ALL UNTIL YOU DO)
See this link for all the necessary info.

Ya, backup your data immediately. That sounds like an IBM harddrive, an IBM Deathstar.
Backup your data and get a new harddrive, this one won't survive the end of the month I guess.

Great advice!
I still can't believe as D'espice said, they are still using Deathstars in new Macs... does a decent drive really cost that much more?!
I opened my d867 and literally shuddered when I saw the IBM sticker on the drive...

From systems with this issue that I've seen. They've always been Maxtor Drives. Doesn't necessarily mean they're going to fail imminently, but when the beeping starts, usually the system will crash at time of beep or it mostly occurs upon wake from sleep to a gray screen. After a day or so, up to a few days, it'll seem like the issue's resolved and no longer occurring. It then may resurface in a couple of weeks or months. But, yes, getting a new drive would be the better thing to do.
If you've got APP, go get it fixed by Apple under your protection plan if within 3 years.

OK, I looked into some drives and found a Maxtor DiamondMax 80GB drive 7200RPM (to replace the Maxtor 60GB drive). It runs for about $79 bucks. I didn't get the 3 year protection plan so I don't think it's covered. I bought it in May 2001 (the model came out in Jan. of that year). The drive is worth the $$$, so I'll get it immediately. What to do with the 'good/bad' drive? Hmmmm. Trashola?
