Howdy, I am currently using an old Power Computer machine (a mac clone) with a 60GB IDE harddrive attached to Sonnet ATA card that resides in a PCI slot in the Power Computing machine. The machine has XPostFacto on it which allows old hardware to run OSX, so it has 10.1.5 on it.

Anyway, I am using this set-up to serve MP3's and files on my fairly large home network (about 7 machines). It runs fairly well (last uptime was 104 days!) but it often seems to time-out or just be very slow. I've also filled the 60GB drive with Mp3's.

These factors are making me want to upgrade to a more modern set-up. I am thinking about just buying an old iMac DV and connecting an external FireWire enclosure with a 120GB EDI drive in it.

Can anyone comment on how this set-up might be good or bad? The main attraction to the iMac DV is that I don't need a powerful computer, but i do need one with firewire and one that can run OSX.

Anyone know anything about the NIC card in the iMac DV is it 10/100???

Thanks so much!

It's 10/100 alright. I imagine it'd serve your needs quite well. The only concern I can think of is running it 24/7. Since it doesn't have a fun, it can get pretty hot. If you make sure the back end of it can hang off the back of a desk, it'll get a great airflow and should be fine.

It should run fine, and I don't think heat will be much of an issue. I have a DVSE iMac that I leave on 24/7.

Seconded. My first gen iMac DV is on 24/7 (the screen sleeps, and the HD spins down occasionally) and I have no heat issues. I've also added more RAM (384 MB in all) and replaced the HD (Seagate Barracuda V, see separate thread "silent HD" for details), which will both contribute heat, and still no issues.
