Or the OEM DVD-R 105. The can be had somewhere about $200 now. I think the only issue would be if a special faceplate would be required...

You can always check the drive compatibility list at
XLR8YourMac to
see if a drive is compatible.

I put a dvr-104 in my g4/400 gigabit. works fine.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

I put a pioneer-104 in my AGP/500 G4 a while back, with no difficulty (ok some difficulty, but I subsequently found a site detailing how to do it more easily). There's some more info at this thread

how do you get the mirror plate to open once installed --was installation dummy proof like ram or internal hard drive?

I put a Pioneer DVR-105 in my dual 1.25 PowerMac and I had to pop off the "face" part of the tray, but otherwise works with iDVD 3 and has no problems. Make sure you get one with the latest firmware, which is 1.3 I believe, or else you need a PC to flash it. 1.2 firmware is reported to work with Mac, but the original 1.0 isn't supported by iDVD... or so i've read.

I walked into OfficeMax this weekend and found they had the CenDyne 4x DVD-R on sale for an amazing price. ($249-$30 in-store rebate, -$30 OfficeMax rebate, -$40 CenDyne rebate, =$149)

Why this drive? Because it uses the Pioneer DVR-105 mechanism.

I have a 450 MHz DP PowerMac G4. I followed the swap-out directions found on xlr8yourmac (I also needed some specific G4 tower found on DVD Creation )

After putting things back together and restarting my PowerMac, the drive was recognized across the board. Showed up in System Profiler, recognized by Toast, stuck a blank DVD-RW in the drive and the Finder asked me what I wanted to do with the blank DVD-RW, iTunes recognized it, and most importantly, iDVD accepted it as a legitimate drive and allowed me to install the software.

I have not burned anything with the drive yet, however.

Note that in order to use iDVD 3, you will need about 2GB of free drive space for the software, as well as another 5 GB of free drive space for the invisble .tmp files iDVD will create when rendering your projects.

anybody install one in a cube? I've seen you can buy the ones Apple offers in their powerbooks for about $500+ but have yet to hear if they work with iDVD
