I've had this new machine for about a month now...most of that time has been spent getting kernel panics about 3x a day, though last monday I had 6 in an hour. I've done every hardware test imaginable, and it's passed them all...it passes the disk checks and has no other problems besides the panics. I've reinstalled the OS (10.2.4) about 6 times (though I only have the software restore CD...supposedly I should have 2 Jaguar CDs but I don't) with no results...I've moved the RAM (factory installed) to different slots, but that didn't help. I called Apple Care two days ago and they didn't help me at all (told me to reinstall the OS again, and didn't ask what I had done before...the lady took me for an idiot) and I'm about ready to box up this machine and ship it back to where it came from, that or throw it out the window.

Specs:

PowerMac G4 1.4 DP w/ 512 MB ram
FW 800
2x 180 GB harddrives (right now I'm only running off the master w/ the slave partitioned as free space)
and blah blah blah....

I have a feeling I'm going to need to take it somewhere...

Is it still under warranty? Just send it back for another one. If you've really done all you said, I'd just trade it in!
Be happy.

Sending it back sounds like the best option right now...I wonder if I can find some sort of return policy I got with this beast...

What does the kernel panics say? usually they have some idicator as to what caused the problem. My DP 1.25Ghz used to give some IO errors in the KP, and it turn out my Pioneer DVD-R was the culprit. Turned off drive spindown/sleep in energy saver, all better.

The majority of them say something like

panic(cpu 0): thread_invoke: preemption_level -1
in either cpu 0 or cpu 1.

One says

panic(cpu 1): thread_invoke: state 0x1

and the one I got when using iTunes was

panic(cpu 1): simple lock deadlock detection

I have 16 pages of panic logs since late April, those 3 are the most common ones.

Did the drives come from the factory, or did you install them yourself? If you installed them, are they both set to cable select? They should not be set to master or slave.

EDIT: I'm not well-versed in kernel logs, but the references to the cpu make me wonder if you've got a bum processor.

Both HDs were factory installed, and the master/slave is what they are set to by default, apparently...I haven't installed any hardware or system modification software.

Yeah man that can't be healthy. I'd be sending it back to Apple for a replacement. Best of luck.

Get it replaced. It's either the RAM or the chipset that is defective in some way

thoroughly used up, worn out, leaking oil, shouting GERONIMO!"

Put it to rest and have Apple give you a new one...

replace it.

I have a duel 1.42 and in 2 months it has crashed only twice, once right after I got it and was installing programs...the other time was also involoved installing a new program I think.

But... its been running now for like a month without crashing ever, under very heavy usage.

So I think you just have a lemon... get it replaced asap.

OK, folks. Step aside. Professional Apple Authorized and Certified Service Technician here.
Long answer: KPs are almost ALWAYS hardware related. If the thing is new, you got you some bad mojo running and gumming up the juju works in the hand thereby reversing the polarity of the bifurcated invertibrator's neuromantical hydroponic loop nets.
Short Answer: Send it back.

Oh. And in all seriousness: that Applecare thing needs addressing. ANY qualified service person KNOWS that most of these KPs are Hardware related. Chances that it is SW are just plain insignificant. Have you run the AHT disk yet? Do that. Write down the error code. Email me and tell me what that code is and I'll tell you specifically what is wrong with your machine. If you get no error code, the likelihood is that it is your RAM (RAM tests are for shyte, IMO- they catch Badness about 20% of the time).

I'm going to pull your head off because I don't like your head.

Unless you live no where near a dealer, don't send it back. Take it to an authorized service dealer and have the CPU replaced. When I say CPU I mean the actual CPU not the entire computer. It will be quicker than sending it back a waiting for a new one.

Some of you are far too quick to send something back instead of having it fixed.

I had the same problem with a Quicksilver. Had the CPU replaced and it worked find after that.

Thanks everyone...it's going to go to a service dealer to get the logic board and/or processors replaced. I finally talked to a competent applecare tech on Friday night.
