Has anyone ever heard of being zapped by a firewire cable? Well its not that severe. Not even as bad as a static shock. But when I hold the firewire connector close to my fingers, my finger tingles.
Probably not enough to do any harm, but what is this?
Could this be my iMac's firewire? the cable? or what?

vvedge,
I know there's a small amount of current traveling through the firewire cable . . . how else do you think your iPod charges while it's "sync-ed" with your mac? Not sure on the voltage, though.
You should try putting the cable on your tongue just for kicks.
haha.
cheers,
brian

Be careful as I have read posts from others that have had the circuit get burned and fail by for instance static electricity and replacing can get costly if the computer has no warranty.

I've had this happen to me before too. The outlet wasn't grounded properly or something. I don't really remember what it was exactly.

That puts the "fire" in firewire.
Put it on your tongue for a real treat.

As a techie I can tell you that you most likley have a bad cable, I have mic cables shock me evevy once in a while. The best thing to do is to replace the cable. If I'm right it shouldn't harm your equipment any, just gets annoying as hell.

OUCH!!!!
I got a pretty bad shock today. OY! And I guess that rules out the cable because I was using a different one. Whoa!
Man, this is gonna get dangerous. What do I do?
Keep in mind this thing is years out of warranty and I dont wanna pay to fix something that I could just get a better and faster one for.
I dont want to get killed either.... eek!

It's not volts that kill.. Static electricity is several million volts. .00000000000000000000001 amps
Sounds like the firewire connector(within the machine) is not grounded.
My advice to you is to either leave the things plugged in or don't use it. One of these times you get shocked your are going to screw something up internal.

Get it checked out. This could do major damage to equipment.
Replace the cable first, but it might not be that... mind you, the sheath should not be charged, so it probably *is* a fault in the cable.

Well, too late... my ghost is writing this post right now. Hehe
well, it probably did kill my 200 gig firewire hard drive recently. It took that much for me to try and fix it.
All it needed was me to ground the damn iMac and everything that was plugged into it. The shocks stopped. I also put in a UPS and when the blackout last week hit, I could have lost my iMac. Phew.
Let that be a lesson... to me.
