In high school (85-88) I went to a vocational high school in Reynoldsville Pa to learn computer programming on a IBM S/36(mini COmputer). And with that experience and knowledge in college as a freshman I was offered a workstudy job in the computer services department, programming and helping to manage the Colleges DEC PDP/11
...
One day my boss Called me into his office, Mark you need to learn how to use Larry's Mac (3 people in the department me, larry the sys admin, programmer and dave the boss).

needless to say I was pissed off. Hey I'm a programmer/sys admin and deal with terminals and tape drives and code I didn't have time for a Mac..
But I LOVED it.... I had to learn fast because our college was starting a program were all students would be given a MAC upon entrance to the college... BAck then it was a MAC classic.....

Well fast foward 12 years and my sister who has a Pwerbook running OSx has been bugging me to get back into mac.. Well my best friend called me up and said hey my Dad just got a new I-mac and needs you to help him transfer all his data from his (two year old) old I-mac. ANd he says you can have the old one!!!

SO today I go help a person set up a new I-mac 17" and walk away with a I-mac...

I'm pretty excited about this and it might spur me to buy a new one...

Oh my classic is still running, I have it in a closet downstairs...

Well I got the I-Mac.. My son is very excited.. It's is a 333mhz with 32mb.

My first thing to do is to upgrade the ram to 512mb.
I'm running system 8.6 right now is there any advantage to move up to 9.? or OSX??

Should I upgrade the video memory??

Are Processor upgrades worth it???

ANy one exchange out their stock CD-rom with a 3rd party Drive??

My vote is to go to at least 512 MB and OS X. You'll love Jaguar...
MacBook 2.0 160/2GB/SuperDrive
Lots of older Macs

You cannot replace or uprage the video memory. The memory is probably low, maybe around 4, 6, 8, or 16, megs on a Rage 128 built in video card. You can upgrade the processor, i believe. You may also want to upgrade the hard drive to one with a faster speed. These and the addition of 512 megs of RAM will allow you to run jagaur at a solid speed, not snappy, but solid.
