Do apple computers crash like PeeCee's? I have had my Powerbook and Powermac for about 3 months and havent even thought about backing them up, b/c I cant imagine this system crashing. What is the best way --put all "apps and docs" on a couple of dvd-r.

You should still backup your important data (school work and stuff)... I have had a couple IBM HDs crash on me. The best way to backup if you have a .mac account is to use there backup utility. It easliy backups up all your prefs and docs.

Short answer. Yes!
Long answer: after 15+ years of computing experience, a backup is essential. The more important the data, the more often you should backup. For docs, I burn CDs. I regularly tar my music onto another HD. I also keep copies of my Docs in my iPod.
Reason: software failure, hardware failure, need to reinstall/upgrade, etc. Simply do.

Coming from a PC environment and then becoming a switcher, I totally agree with the above posts about backing up your important data.
While Mac OS X is a lot more stable than most versions of Windows that I've used, I've had kernel panics and non-starts with X, too. Nothing is worse than the NT (or Win2k) blue screen of death, but it's always an inconvenience (at best) to lose your data in any form.
In short, if it means something to you, back it up!
X.

Definitely backup....and on a regular basis too. While OS X may be more stable than what you are used to there is also the hardware aspect to look at as well. Apple does not make all their own parts - they buy hard drives from IBM, Maxtor, Western Digital etc and they are the same ones that PC makers use and as such they are subject to failure. Your warranty may cover getting a replacement drive but it will not cover the data!

i backed up my system on an external fw drive. just yesterday, my main drive got messed up, so good thing i have a backup, right? go figure, the one time i need it, the backup drive fails, can't mount, bad clicky noises.
so, my answer? yes, backup, and backup to more than one source.
