I'm going to be purchasing an extra 120 GB + internal hard drive for my MDD 1.25. Wondering if anybody had any recommendations or definite "no goes". This is for video editing (final cut pro). Thanks.

$117.50 including 2 day shipping for a 120GB Western Digital SE with 8MB cache

3 year warranty on this model.

Careful...a lot of hard drives just have 1 year warranties (and 2MB cache).

Sorry if people are getting sick of this, but everytime the Western Digital Special Edition drives get mentioned I always mentioned the sleep problems many people (including me) have had after putting in one of these drives. Quite a few people can't sleep their computer (iMacs and PowerMacs) with one of the SE drives in there. The drive clicks (sounds like it's spinning up and down again) when the computer is asleep. WD says their drives are fine and it's Apple's problem with the OS.
Just wanted to let you know.

Wasn't aware of the issues concerning that drive.

I'll take a wild guess that maybe the drive should be jumpered to 'cable select' instead of master/slave. worth a try...if it hasn't been tried already.

I have a dual 1.25 FW800 just two months old. It has a 80 gb Baraccuda V in it and the sound of the fans drown out the hard drive except for when it is accessing the disk--and then it's quite noticeable--louder than the Baraccuda IV, Maxtor or even IBM deathstar i've owned recently. Just got a WD 1200JB--the 8mb 3 year special edition drive--to add to the FW800. The heads are nearly silent when accessing the disk and it certainly seems every bit as fast although it's all subjective since I've not run any tests. Had no sleep issues either. Having owned a Cube with a Powerlogix board, I'm very familiar with sleep issues!

Please do a search of this forum -- or just browse the first page or two of it. There have been new hard drive threads almost every day, just look at some of them and continue them.
