what do you think of the article. They should use those for the laptops and have the ibm chips for desk tops. That would make things even smaller for the laptops. If more things are intagrated in to the mother board.
less watts = more battery life right?
DDR and DDR 2 SDRAM
thats just ddr right. They probely ment sdram 2.
G4+ could be used for low end towers. For apple to get a tower at 1000 dollars.
.1 micron is hella small. smaller than the .3 micron witch is small to.
What do u think they mean by dual core?
25W of power dissipation.

I just don't see Apple relying too heavily on Moto any longer. It's become very clear that Apple processors are not Moto's priority and that Apple's desktop sales and perceived speed in the the consumer's eyes have suffered.
And with a proven performer like IBM essentially saying "here, let us build a custom processor for you based on our kick-ass Power4" I can see Apple using it as an opportunity to tell Moto "don't let the door hit ya in ass on the way out."
However, with the power consumption required of a 970 processor, I can see Apple keeping 'em around to power their portable line...at least until IBM figures out how to throttle down the 970s hunger for battery.

.
you never know. The power pc is joint from ibm and motorola and apple. So till the contract is done. Portible yes. Desktop they could use it for low end for closer to 1000 dollar desktops and use IBM for the mid and high end. But at o.1 micron its hella small. Could be very fast. Since the g4 now is fast and its not even using the o.13 micron. and still keeps up with intel and AMD

From the article:
"The chip is some way off, with a 2004 appearance at the earliest. "
Motorola has got all the time in the world to screw this up between now and the end of 2004.
I think the 970's will be flowing quite freely from IBM by the time that chip comes out, and the 980 might beat it to market, knowing Moto's scheduling problems.
Not that it wouldn't be great if it happened, but holding your breath may be hazardous to your health.

Wow, what secret version of the G4 have you been using? It does not keep up with AMD or Intel. At all.

Yea me too...
But seriously, the new G4 will be out of the question for the Powermacs. It will be very good for Powerbooks though: low power consumption, and no need for Apple to create a totally new motherboard architecture for its mobile lineup (at least for another while). Another reason why Apple might pick this processor for it's Powerbook is that they might want to put as many IBM processors as they can into the Powermac - ie. demand might be so high that they don't have enough to put in Powermacs AND Powerbooks.
my 2 cents,
Doc Holiday

i could see the i-series sticking to G4s (faster, better bus speeds, etc) and the power-series using 970s.
