Hi all,

I have a Tibook, and I'm looking at getting another cheap mac to act as a server and host for a spare hard drive. It basically will store lots of photo files, my itunes collection, act as a web server and backup server etc.

Needs to have firewire for the external drive.

What's the cheapest old mac that I can do this on?

Cheers,

J.

Visit http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html to see the Jag Macs, then scope out the individual machines that are FireWire equipped at http://www.apple-history.com

I guess my only other advice is if you can spring for a G4 Mac vs. a G3, OS X does tend to run best on G4s. Good luck.

If you're adventurous, you can use an old world mac to run Jaguar and use a tool such as xpostfacto or sonnet X to install jaguar. I bought a PM 8500 for $45. Add an $100 G3 and a scsi drive, and you're good to go...

For such a task, I recommend a B&W Powermac G3 (smurftower).

It ain't the cheapest, but it's a pretty good value for the money.

Yes, but the beige doesn't have firewire or USB, it has a dog-slow ATA/16 hard disk controller, and a slower 66mhz bus. The B&W G3's are only a little bit more expensive, and you won't have all your expansion slots maxed out trying to provide firewire, faster IDE, etc.
(the B&W has 4 slots compared to the Beige's 3. The extra one in the B&W is a faster 66mhz PCI slot for your Radeon: mac edition)

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I think I'll save for a B&W G3, as I found a few on ebay around $150.

I'm going to get a firewire drive now

http://www.coolerexpress.com/hd-ib-720fw.html

$140 for 120Gb in enclosure with PSU and cable, then get the G3 as money allows, and plug the drive in there, accessing via airport. The G3 can sit in a closet and serve itunes, web pages etc.

Cheers,

J.

I have a Beige G3 466 that is doing this now. I added an Adaptec duoconnect card to it for firewire/usb, it is very sluggish, but runs fine for file storage. You definately do not want to work on it every day though. It is painfully slow. It serves up files/photos/mp3s just fine.

Hello I am forced to work on a Beige G3 266 every single day since I am dirt poor and can't even afford basic rent, so I am in renting a tiny tiny room. and have been for 7 years now (well renting it for 6).

I am on this biege G3 indefently. at least I have upgraded with USB/Firewire, Radeon and bigger HD.
