I am helping a friend with a modem problem on his iMac 233. He keeps loosing his internet connection. There are several different errors that break the connection, including "remote access has disconnected you", "loss of carrier signal" etc. It keeps trying to connect, sometimes it can hold the connection, sometimes it can't. They have tried different phone jacks, no change. I ran my Tech Tool Pro 3 test on it last night. At first it said everything was ok with the modem, but when I put in the host telephone number into the modem test, it did say that the test failed, with a error that said carrier signal not detected. What does this mean? Is it the modem, or could it be software related?
thanks;

Who is your ISP?
I had the same problem a few months ago with my old ISP, they told me that there must be a fault with my modem. When I told them I had an engineer look at the modem and he gave it the all clear they simply said there must be a fault on my phone line. So I got the phone company to check the line and there was no problem with the line either. The phone company even increased the gain on the line but I was still getting the problem with the carrier signal. Eventually I changed ISP and I have never had that problem since (strange). Everythings been AOK not AOL.
