We have a 500 MHz slot loading iMac which needs a new HD. Would like to install a larger, faster drive that will accommodate Jaguar.

Any recommendations as to type of drive, and if this is a do it yourself project?

Thanks.

Most definitely a DIY project.

Check out www.xlr8yourmac.com. It's got hundreds of reviews of replacement drives, my own included.

Good luck!

While you're at www.xlr8yourmac.com, check out the reader reports on the Western Digital Special Edition drives. Many users (iMac and Power Mac) can't put their computer to sleep with one of these drives in it. I have one and my iMac won't sleep either.
Just thought I'd let you know.

Other than the above problem, basically any IDE drive can go in it. Early 7200 RPM drives ran too hot for the fanless iMacs, but modern 7200 drives are just fine (in fact, you'll be hard-pressed to find a 5400RPM drive any more).

Just set the drive's jumper to Master and you'll be set.

Thanks to all for previous comments. Installed Seagate 80 gb Barracuda drive tonight; installation went fine.

One problem remains: persistent white noise out of speakers, and terrible sound quality. In sound control panel, output panel has "Specialized Audio Laboratories," with message reading "no settings for this device."

Initialized the drive twice tonight, first time building it up to 9.2.2, second time to 9.2.1, figuring a component was missing, same result. Trashed sound preference file, restarted with no change. Start up chime works, but all subsequent sounds are awful.

Solutions appreciated!

Thanks.
