I have bought a 2 MB HPV ("high performance videocard"). Itīs sticking in the PDS slot of the machine (6100 PPC @60 MHz, OS 7.5.1) and works, but when i go to the "monitor control" and try to switch the resolution i still stick with 832x624, but according to (link) the card should be able to drive the monitor at 1152x870 (16 bit). Am i missing something? Do i need to install drivers? I thought (and everybody told me so) these cards were plugīn play?!?. The monitor is not the problem since itīs a Sony multiple scan able to run 1024x768. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Pat

Go to the control strip (if you have it installed) and hold option while clicking it. It should give you the full resolution.

I also have an OLD classic application that also lets you pick any frequency and resolution the card supports, if it is not listed in the menu there's a problem.

Fortunately I archive this stuff because I don't think it is on the `net anymore and I hosted it for you:

Multi-Resolutions

Let me know of your results please and let me know when I can pull this offline.

Most likely, the Mac->VGA adapter (DB15->HD15) is misconfigured, thus telling the Mac that it doesn't support higher resolutions.

Right, but it shouldn't matter normally. Tell the video card to output the resolution you know works and see what happens!

It very much matters. Some graphics cards will not allow the sense codes to be overridden.

And even so, on startup, it will re-poll the sense codes and revert to one of the video modes that the sense codes say is safe. (SwitchRes can override this. Pressing Control while clicking the Control Strip resolution module will NOT list modes that the sense codes don't allow... it just lists all possible allowed modes, whereas normally it only displays the "recommended" modes.)

Ok, I was just talking about normally, as noted. The HPV card and all Macs I've tried this on work with the key on the control strip (boy has it been a long time since my main machine ran OS 9) or the multi-resolutions app I noted. That may not be a absolute rule.

Yes, at startup it will likely go to an unusual resolution if the adapter is setup incorrectly or doesn't support the sense code for the resolution you want, but at a point during startup it should go to the resolution you set.

One thing I have never understood, is why do the Mac->VGA adapters have mode setting switches at all? Since they simply just re-route the wires, shouldn't the graphics card be able to communicate with the monitor directly?

Thanks for the input so far! Tooki: It isnīt a VGA-HDI45 adaptor, itīs a generic DB15-HDI45 Apple adapter...and itīs not used, the HPV card has a DB15 outlet which directly connects to the Multiple scan (Apple branded Sony).

PS: Schalliol: I do not have a control strip, this machine is running the stoneage OS 7.5.1. Thanks for the link hosting, i have downloaded and will try it out tonight.

Glad to help. As you saw in Tooki's response. I forgot that it's not option you press, but control. Option allows you to move around your items.

That should work from 7.1 to 9.1 at least, but I think it would work even earlier. I believe that it's an application, but I kept it in my control panels folder. It does work with multiple monitors too.
